Anyone know of a CHL class in Spanish?

#1

Post by gringogigante »

I have a firearms student of mine that wants to get his CHL, but speaks only limited English. My Spanish is enough to get him through firearms classes but not a whole day of CHL material.

Any suggestions? He's in the DFW area but will travel within reason.

thanks!

The language lessons may be a great idea long term, but that doesn't answer the immediate question. I think the Texas legislature must have anticipated CHL for people who don't speak English. They put the bilingual requirement in the law for 30.06 signs, which apply only to CHL. Based on the signs I saw voting in Houston, they should add Viet to the 30.06 signs here.

Doesn't the written test have to be in English? I'm thinking it's going to be pretty hard to pass without a basic knowledge of English.
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

I'd rather not turn this into a thread that must be moved to the Political Discussions thread.

Can I have my thread back?
Thanks!

I did a search and at another TX gun forum they were talking about the same topic, the responses were about the same as here, however there was mention about the state may provide an interpreter. The thread was a couple years old and no links to where it might show the states offer. My wife is Chinese and she has worries about her English skills also however I think she is more worried then needs to be. Give him material in English before he takes class he can review on his own then take class if he cant pass test then restudy and retest.

Great idea! Thanks. I'll offer that as an option.

I saw 2 classes in the Houston area that do classes once a month....so there's that as a last resort.

Anyone else?
Thanks!

I saw the one teaching in Pasadena but figured that would be too far.

Interestingly, here's what DPS says
45. Will all classroom tests be in English only?
The law does not require classes to be offered in any language other than English. However, classes may be offered in other languages as long as instructors teach key English phrases such as "I have a handgun" and "May I see your concealed handgun license?"
Good luck with helping out your student.

I find the comments from DPS very interesting. I just did a quick check of both the Government Code and DPS rules. I might have missed something but I cannot find any mention of the language required anywhere in either. I also find no mention of the instructor being required to teach any specific phrases in English. I think it comes under the heading of several other subjects we have discussed. That it is very good advice, but not required by the law.

I wonder if there is not a niche market available for a bilingual instructor to offer classes in Spanish (or Vietnamese or Korean).

A little off topic, but anyway, as I said before my wife is Chinese and she picks up the Chinese news paper for the Dallas area there is a columnist, a female, in fact she is running for office in the area someplace, she wrote an article about how it is important for women to get a CHL and learn how to use a gun for their own protection. My wife translated for me and it seemed to be very informative article. It was one of those little nudges to get my wife towards her CHL(someday).

I'm in Allen (not far from north FW) and would love to have a CHL class for her and any group of women, family, etc. If you get at least 5 or 6 in addition to her, she gets hers for free.

I love getting women in a class. They are usually much easier to teach and have less hurdles to get over. If she's afraid to shoot, I have a range here that would open up a couple of hours early for us so there'd be no other shooters around to make her nervous with stares or a bunch of noise from shooting.

I have these quite often. I bring a little Walther .22 pistol and work on the basics and just having fun.

let me know if I can help. I also have a good buddy north of FW in Justin that's great with women's classes.

I was just talking to a fellow instructor about that very thing....the more packin' heat, the better I say.

We were talking through the logistics of it and the inherent hurdles of teaching citizens with limited English to carry a concealed handgun in an English speaking state/country.

As an instructor wanting to take care of my students as much as possible, it does honestly make me a bit nervous. But it brings up the larger point of teaching those to carry safely, inform LEO's that they're legal and carrying, reading and understanding signage, etc.

It does come down to a point where they absolutely must have (at very least) a minor command of the English language. But, as someone that lived in Mexico for a while, that can take a lifetime. Some never master it. But most have a pretty good command of English.

Interesting..... I hope someone can step up and fill this niche. Could be very helpful for all involved.
Thanks!

I'll play devil's advocate here.

Did you know the USA has no "official" language? So being a country with no official language, why would you be making a snide remark over one language or the other?
