Re: Accidently "exposed" My CHL - almost humorous
Sounds to me like the only person being rude during the conversation was the "lady" asking for ID. Unless she asked specifically for your DL, I believe you responded appropriately and she simply couldn't get over an obvious personal bias against people carrying firearms.
I'm afraid, had it been me, I would have explained that there is absolutely nothing illegal about using a CHL as a picture ID and had she required a drivers license, it would have been helpful to know initially that is what she expected. I then would have explained that I don't drive and therefore have no drivers license so if she insists on a picture ID, what you see is what you get.
Maybe she's simply needs to consider a line of work where she doesn't have to deal with people face to face.

I believe the basic political division in this country is not between liberals and conservatives but between those who believe that they should have a say in the personal lives of strangers and those who do not.

I too say thank you when ID'd for a credit card purchase. However.....in this case it didn't come to mind. I didn't admit this in my OP but I was thinking about my CCW because I'd left it in the console. Duh! when they ask for ID with my credit card, I always say "Thank you for asking." it is way too easy to spend other peoples money these days.

I write "ask for ID" in the Sig. Line of all of credit cards and thank them when they do.

It's generally a violation of their merchant agreement to ask for ID. They can get serious fines or lose their right to process credit cards if they get busted doing it.The Annoyed Man wrote:I don't mind showing ID when I pay with a card because I have been the victim of identity theft more than once. In fact, my credit cards have the word "ask" on the back in the signature space. Not many ask because they either don't care and/or are tired of smart aleck replies.

Maybe so, but it has happened with every single purchase I've ever made at Bass Pro and Cabelas. When my son used to work as a cashier at Bass Pro in Grapevine, they were specifically trained to ask for IDs. Also, I have a merchant account. To the best of my knowledge, I am not barred from asking for ID. Of course, I'm using an online virtual terminal rather than a card swiper. I don't ask for the ID because I personally know the people who hand me their credit cards. They are are my website design clients.jordanmills wrote:It's generally a violation of their merchant agreement to ask for ID. But like I said, I'm relieved that someone is checking when I am asked. Maybe when someone gets into your own shorts for $45,000 the first time, $7,000 the second time, and a few hundred bucks each the fourth and fifth times, you might view it differently. Or not. Like I said, your mileage may vary.

I've never had a checkbook for any of my current accounts. I just buy a book of deposit slips from time to time and if someone can't take plastic I go get cash.pbwalker wrote:But...checks? People still write checks? I have a checkbook I've opened once in the past 3 years. lol

In the 1970s, Immediately after a divorce, I had a credit card where I put a "STOP" on the account so anyone running my credit card had to call for authorization. The credit people when called, asked "Is he standing only upon his left foot with his right foot off the floor?" (That's the condition I had them check to verify my identity) and cashiers would look at me and laugh and say into the phone "yes" and then the credit Dept approved the purchase. It not only protected my card from unauthorized use by my Ex, but gave me an opportunity to tell cashiers why that happened and indicate that I was now single.
I guess I could have just had them ask for ID, but that was more fun.

McKnife wrote:I hope this doesn't sound rude, but when I am confronted by situations where retailers request my ID and/or want to verify my receipts and purchases, I simply tell them to mind their own business. I've been in retail and they are very intrusive.
When it comes to checking ID/Phone #'s/Zip Codes, I estimate 90% of the time I am met with "deer in headlights" look by cashiers and I complete my transaction without any further chitchat. The other 10% of the time, retailers will insist on checking ID and I tell them no. They will not process the transaction so I either pay with cash or I leave for their competitor. It has potential to be inconvenient, but I am sick and tired of trying to prove I am a good guy.
If I am ever "exposed," you said it best... don't argue with fools. Simply ignore them and carry about.
I am so tired of the "identification nation"... Every two bit clerk and self appointed credit card theft agent has to demand my "papers". 'Forget" you! I can buy $15,000 first class ticket to Timbuktu on my Amex over the phone from bigairline.com. But my $7 Justin Bieber CD purchase at Best Buy (for my daughter... ) results in a demand for my Texas Driver License to make sure it matches my Platinum Amex. And I guarantee I could hand them a black woman's driver license (I am a male person of pallor), with a wrong name, and they would process the transaction. One time I saw a lady hand over a Visa with here picture on it, and they asked her for ID. Why?
Soon we will have to show our internal passport on demand by any "official". As the Nazi's officials used to say, "Ihre Papiere, Bitte". Your "papers" please.
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

My card never leaves my hand, I swipe it myself.
The only time I got ripped off was when my bank made everbody switch to Master debit cards instead of plain ATM (or pay stupid fees), and I used it to pay at a restaurant. You know, waiter takes it away, comes back later with a receipt for you to sign. Somebody used my number to order a couple thousand bucks worth of stuff from a truck stop pay phone a few blocks from the restaurant just a couple hours later.
So I swipe it myself or pay cash.

That's great idea...jmra wrote:My credit cards have my pic on the back. When they ask for ID I tell them to turn the card over.
I never sign my cards... I just write "Check ID" in the signature block.
If my card had my photo, that would be great...
