Need info to get CHL.
I am going to be getting my CHL and want to have all I need to make sure that it goes smoothly.I read that I will have to list all convictions that I have but I don't know what they were and they happen in two different states.I have a idea of what they are but not exactly what it says on my record it has been about 15 years ago.I have recently bought 2 firearms from dealers that ran back ground checks always delayed but got the weapons.I was thinking for getting a background check on myself but have read some bad reviews on some the vendors that do those things.Any help will be appreciated and thank y'all in advanced.

If you know the county and state where the offenses occurred you should be able to let your fingers do the walking and get the information you are seeking.

Also be prepared for lots of, "That's not our department" handing off, only to end up back at the first place you called. I have also heard of some States/Counties wanting heavy fees to get you your information, so be prepared.jmra wrote:If you know the county and state where the offenses occurred you should be able to let your fingers do the walking and get the information you are seeking.

Re: Need info to get CHL.
The CHL application requires that you list all arrests. As others have suggested, start doing searches for the court clerks for the counties where the arrests/convictions occurred. Certified copies of their records are the only ones that the DPS will accept. If you truly can not remember where you were arrested and convicted, a private background check might give you some more information that will help you track them down. However, be advised that the DPS will still perform the check and may get different results. Good luck on your search.#1apbt wrote:I am going to be getting my CHL and want to have all I need to make sure that it goes smoothly.I read that I will have to list all convictions that I have but I don't know what they were and they happen in two different states.I have a idea of what they are but not exactly what it says on my record it has been about 15 years ago.I have recently bought 2 firearms from dealers that ran back ground checks always delayed but got the weapons.I was thinking for getting a background check on myself but have read some bad reviews on some the vendors that do those things.Any help will be appreciated and thank y'all in advanced.

It might help if you tell us what you can remember about any arrests and convictions.

This is what I recall 88'posstion of alcohol(18 years old),94'simpal assault, unlawful entry, criminal mischief,96'possesion marijuana(less than 2 grams) and that is what I think is on my record but like I said I want to make sure that I get it right.

If you mean that the DPS will accept a "rap sheet" from the FBI for your arrest record, then the answer is no. They will get the same information when they run your prints.#1apbt wrote:I seen that I can get a rap sheet from the FBI that should give me exactly what they will need right. Thanks for the help and advice.
What they want is your arrest listed and the outcome of those arrest(s), for that you will need to contact the States/Counties/Cities where you were arrested, and get any paperwork that shows the outcome of those incidents. This could be a hassle as you state they happened in other States.
In my case I was arrested several times in the early 90's for unpaid parking/speeding tickets. I had to contact the local court clerk who told me they didn't have or keep info on Class C misdemeanors from over 10 years ago. I then proceeded to the Police station where I had been taken to and requested my arrest records. About 5 days later I received a signed letterhead stating I had no arrest on record.
When I sent in my paperwork to the DPS I included all the paperwork I had received and a simple letter(basically what I wrote above) explaining why I was including the paperwork.
Re: Need info to get CHL.
Were you actually convicted of anything, what was the outcome of the assault and unlawful entry?#1apbt wrote:This is what I recall 88'posstion of alcohol(18 years old),94'simpal assault, unlawful entry, criminal mischief,96'possesion marijuana(less than 2 grams) and that is what I think is on my record but like I said I want to make sure that I get it right.
Re: Need info to get CHL.
From what I remember they were all misdemeanors done some probation and that was that.Like I stated in my question I have bought weapons with in the past year from gun dealers I was delayed but was able to get the firearms after a week.
Re: Need info to get CHL.
Yeah none of them would be disqualifiers, but you still need to provide dispositions or any other records from the courts to show the outcomes.#1apbt wrote:From what I remember they were all misdemeanors done some probation and that was that.Like I stated in my question I have bought weapons with in the past year from gun dealers I was delayed but was able to get the firearms after a week.
Re: Need info to get CHL.
So if I would get that background check from the FBI would that qualify or do I need to get the records from the states where the convictions happen?
Re: Need info to get CHL.
Again your going to need the records/dispositions from the courts where these took place. The FBI records will just show arrest, the DPS is going to get this same exact information when they run your fingerprints through the FBI.#1apbt wrote:So if I would get that background check from the FBI would that qualify or do I need to get the records from the states where the convictions happen?
The DPS wants the court records to show the outcomes, i.e. convicted/probation/dismissed whatever the outcome was. If you don't provide the records it may hold up your application a very long time till the DPS can get those records or they may just end up requesting that you provide these records, which you could have avoided if you just provided them in the beginning, or possibly they may just deny you for lack of paperwork.

Ok. Where (city, county, state) did each of these arrests occur?#1apbt wrote:This is what I recall 88'posstion of alcohol(18 years old),94'simpal assault, unlawful entry, criminal mischief,96'possesion marijuana(less than 2 grams) and that is what I think is on my record but like I said I want to make sure that I get it right.
