About two years ago a student called and said he had been stopped by Galveston PD, gave the officer his DL and when he ran it he came back with why didn't you give me your CHL? you're in trouble now! CHL says I am not carrying so I don't have to show the license. LEO says I'm a Cop don't try to tell me the law. An argument follows and the CHL get's arrested for Resisting Arrest.

I told him he was right about the license, but you never argue with a cop on the street, Get a lawyer and please stay in touch with me on this.

I haven't heard from him since.

I am glad you emphasize the no arguing. You can't win on the street. You can only get arrested. Only place to win is in court. If not armed the best thing to do is give DL, CHL, & say, I am not armed.

Several years ago I was pulled over for speeding on NW Hwy around Inwood (Dallas). I pulled over, turned off the engine, rolled down the window and put both hands on the top of the wheel while i waited for him to approach.

The officer (who was in his 40's) approached my window and asked for my license and insurance. He told me that he stopped me for speeding and asked why I was going so fast, etc...

He then asked me if I had any weapons in the truck. I did. And I didn't have a CHL. I looked him in the eye for just a second and decided that the truth may or may not set me free, but that lying was not going to be an option as this guy was asking a question that he most likely already knew the answer to. I said yes. He asked me for my CHL and I told him that I didn't have a CHL. His only response was, "why not?"

He then told me that he wasn't going to give me any hassle about having a gun in my truck and said that he assumed I had a CHL because of the NRA, TSRA and BASS stickers on the back of my truck. He told me that I should get a CHL and then we chatted about fishing for a minute. Then he told me to slow down and have a nice night and handed me back my license and insurance.

I'm not going to assume that I would ever be stopped by another officer with that same attitude, but it was refreshing to see that there are still some officers out there who are from the "old school". When I was a kid every truck had a gun in it, including rifles in the gun racks on the school parking lot, and I don't remember the streets running with blood back then. It seems that criminals will be criminals regardless of the laws, and honest citizens will not turn into criminals just because they happen to carry a gun.

Carry or not, give up the CHL with your license. Avoid all unwanted confrontations.

:iagree:

Its a tough pill to swallow sometimes...And yes, there are conditions that excuse, or not require you to do so...

But since they got all those new-fangled computers in the cars now...

Might as well avoid it...

Either that, or just obey all the traffic laws, keep your vehicle in good working condition, and the odds are significantly reduced...

And we all know thats a long shot...Especially with me... ;-)

My 21 year old son came home for a short visit last weekend, he was a pallbearer at a funeral here. On the way he was stopped by a DPS Trooper for 74 in a 70. Trooper walked up to his driver's door, asked him if he was in a hurry ? My son replied "no, I'm just on my way to a funeral."

Trooper asked him for DL and insurance papers, my son handed him the DL, his CHL and the insurance card. When he handed them to the Trooper, he told the Trooper that he was carrying. Trooper asked him where the gun was, my son replied that it was inside his left boot. Trooper asked him to step from his truck, and to the right rear and out of traffic.

When they both got back there, the Trooper asked what kind of gun he was carrying. My son replied that it was a S&W 357 snubby. Trooper said "Those are great guns for concealed carry." Trooper told my son he was letting him go with a verbal warning, then told him to have a great day and slow it down a little."

Excellent communication both ways, both parties involved had respect for one another.

i've been pulled over 3 times in the last 6 months, all 3 times I have not been armed, mainly because I was going/coming from work which has the compound posted @ the gates. Any how, all 3 have let me go w/o a ticket, but what I find funny is after the initial stop and I declared my CHL (mind you I said I was not armed) there were always atleast 3 more cops to show up, and on one occasion 5. The first time I really started to worry when he was running my license as the 3 others showed up and proceeded to surround the back of my car, he let me go with a verbal, which was understandable, but was the stop even necessary for a 71 in a 65 going downhill?

Was it necessary to speed?

I know you didn't ask, but you might want to evaluate your driving. ;-)

Yeah, I realize that, but to my defense, it was down a fairly steep hill, not uncommon to gain 5 to 10 mph while on cruise, and on top of that, it was 4am, not many people out at that hour.

That sounds a lot like the new Lexus commercials--the one that parks its self.

Yeah, I remember washboards...
Yeah, there used to be only radio...
Yeah, you had to hold the rabbit ears to get the picture...
Yeah, you used to have to parallel park...
I just saw that commercial yesterday. Is that for real?

Yep it is I read al about it in last months car and driver, it is actually really cool.

I myself would not purchase this car, i am upset that when my tires begin to spin  my electronic throttle decides that it needs to disengage to slow the engine RPM's while at the same time my antilock brakes feel the need to stop the spinning of my tires.

What happenned to the good ol' days of foot to the floor, rubber on the ground and smoke in the air!

A few drivers lose control and in steps the government/automakers to give us all safer cars. You can even buy vehicles that will slow you down when the cruise control is engaged to keep you from rear ending the driver in front of you! :willynilly: What are you doing that you cannot move your foot off of the floor and engage the brake????

Rant over...
Heh... all those are part and parcel of why, when I bought a "new" truck recently, it was a 1989 S-10, which I am now fixing up.
The most complicated automated system I have to worry about is the turn signal.

And the locking glovebox is great for when I have to enter a 30.06-posted location, but man, I sure wish disarming wasn't necessary...

Actually I was playing with him about his "necessary" comment. Sometimes I forget that dry humor is not 'readable' in posts. I need to remember to use the smilies.
