I was curious which "mid-cites" Jaycee was referring to, thank you.SlickTX wrote:Oldgringo wrote:For your own reasons, your profile doesn't reveal much about you. Some people take their internetting very seriously.
Anyway, as far as this story there isn't much more to tell. I quit that job a few months later and never saw him again, but a former employee I still talk to sees him on the train from time to time. He's never threatened him but he feels that we all did him wrong by not firing the girl that rebuffed him and denys the vandalism and threats. He thinks she led him on and embarrased him on purpose. That guy is one of the craziest people I've encountered to date.
2nd reason I own weapons is because in 2008 I got an early morning phone call regarding a friend who had been shot while defending his house from a home invasion. He took a 7.62 round from an SKS in the palm of his hand while trying to hold his front door shut. He lived in a nicer and relatively new neighborhood in the mid-cites and was awoken at 2am by 2 thugs, both with assault rifles, one wearing shoulder pads. They tried to smash the door in but he held strong. One managed to squeeze halfway in and my friend grabbed the barrel of the gun to force it away from him, that's when it went off. Lucky for my friend the thugs fled after the shot and his neighbor and best friend was out front a few minutes later with his AR but the thugs never got caught. It's pretty weird seeing pics of your friends new house splattered with blood, a place I've drank many a beer at and figured was safe.
They are the 'burgs "mid"-way between Dallas and Ft. Worth. Hurst, Euless and Bedford are commonly thought of such, but others would qualify.
Re: Why I own guns.
A cursory google news search has yielded nothing but your welcome to look on your own. I don't remember a story at the time but I could be wrong. This happened around late sep or early october and the homeowner's first name is Robert. I have pics of the scene and his hand post-surgery on a thumb drive at home.austinrealtor wrote: As for this second story, sounds interesting. Care to link to a news article about it? Not saying your lying or anything. I'd just really like to know how the local media covered a home invasion story where two thugs with ASSAULT WEAPONS shot the homeowner, then a neighbor with an "assault weapon" came to his defense.
See guys, perspective is everything. From your perspective some new guy comes in with some differing opinions and gets flack for it, he responds in kind and then it becomes a flame fest. I came here looking to join a community and learn, and within the first few responses people are essentially calling me a liar and insisting that I must be the aggressor. Did I lose my tember and get a little snarky myself? Yes, but that's kind of my MO when I feel I'm being unjustly judged, and anyone judging me on what amounts to a few kilobytes of data on an internet forum will never have the full picture. Take a hard look at how some of you people have responded to me and try to see why I got a little irritated.

Don't cha think if I was (Edited for profanity rule violation. G-rated forum read #1.) that I would have worked in some sweet roundhouse kicks and a "freeze punk!!!"redlin67 wrote:I think I need to go buy a new pair of tall rubber boots.
Generally a person would like to make themselves appear smarter, stronger or otherwise better by lying. I don't see how any of my anecdotes would accomplish that.

Re: Why I own guns.
Alright now - it's getting a little warm. Maybe the Mods should take over. JayCee - wanna shut everybody up and get some props - point to a newspaper piece on the home breakin. Otherwise - your tales, well - while interesting topics - are just tales. In one you are justifying throwing rounds at another motorist because they are reckless. You can't do that son. In this one you are justifying your possession of weapons because of some cracked up felon and another incident that happened to a friend. If your thread was asking folks why they own weapons (or carry concealed), then simple enough... Me = raised around them, hunted, shoot clays, part of my job back in the day, and now because I feel my security is my own responsibility. I think you set a format for yourself when no-one was able to convince you that shooting at the tires of a reckless potential gangbanger was a really bad idea. You got a little testy there. Now - with the recent post - although I did not see a question in it - you explained your reasons for having a weapon and kinda sorta asked about why other people have weapons(?). Folks are probably just reflecting back to the earlier post and thinkin you are just baitin' them. Take a breath, maybe ask a question a different way. Sure, there are people that have obtained weapons because the have had close calls or incidents like you describe - but not everyone has gotten a weapon just in anticipation of a shootout with gangsta types. That is the way your first posts have come across. We OK now??
Whatever happened to questions like 'how do I get the takedown lever out of a 1911 without scratching my $2000.00 weapon?'

Re: Why I own guns.
I had originially posted this under "never again" but I guess that wasn't the appropriate place.
Anyway, people that think I'd lie to make friends on the internet (huge lol considering how this went down)...sorry I'm not going to commit time and effort to validate myself to you. Either believe it or not, IDC...but please don't insult me by assuming that I'd make up lame stories like these. Trust me I could do much better if that's what I was going for; I'm sure I could work a ninja or pirate in there at least.

Look guys, everyone, I read JC's other thread as well. I understand and agree that his initial post was suspicious. As presented, the two most likely scenarios are:
1. He is, in fact, a troll
2. He is painfully unaware: one - that he drives aggressively and two - of just how legally ill-advised and serious his 'on the seat weapon display' was
However, IMO, our forum (of which I am also a fairly new member) has not reacted very well. If we are all well practiced at deescalation, we are certainly not displaying those traits here.
JC has been accused of ignoring the very advice he is asking for. I suppose that may be the case. But I also think that sometimes the tolerance for what is considered reasonable debate on this forum can be a little short. I have experienced this myself.
Many times, the first few responses to an argument will generate additional questions. Or, if the responses seem to be a near miss to the information presented, the OP will feel compelled to elaborate on the conditions a bit more to ensure that all of the initial facts are well understood. This should not be immediately considered to be disrespect to senior members or ignoring the given advice. It is the process of teasing out information that can be present in any healthy conversation or debate. Usually, reasoned and patient dialog will work to persuade one party or both, or at least boil it down to the few points at which the parties will have to agree to disagree. Deep seated opinions and beliefs are not changed overnight and they are certainly not changed by confrontational dialog.
Again, I am not coming to JC's defense to say that he has responded appropriately either (in the car or on this board). I am also not saying he is not a troll (watch the double negative ). I am saying that I think our community may not have given him much of a chance early on - if you reread the initial pages of postings on in his other thread.
Text communication cannot convey the subtleties of human to human interaction. Some people are worse than others at wording things in a way that expresses proper intent.
If our community had taken the higher road and chosen to be a little more patient, we would certainly soon know whether he is trolling, irrevocably delusional, or merely misguided. Because we jumped a bit quickly, IMO, on the trolling bandwagon, we may never know.

Re: Why I own guns.
I found NOTHING in the news and I can't really dedicate more time to this. Heres the thread my buddy posted in a local car forum. I believe the pics are in there somewhere on that site too. If not, and I get bored I may upload them.
Since this event he's installed a peephole and bought a Mossber 'persuader' IIRC.

reading through that thread reminded me why I like this one so much. Some very rude and crass responses on that site.

Agreed, and some of them were mine but he's a drinking/wrenching-on-engines buddy so I can do that.74novaman wrote:reading through that thread reminded me why I like this one so much. Some very rude and crass responses on that site.
In all honestly we're all glad he's alive. Home invasions don't ususally end well and that was a big wake up call to all of us suburbians thinking we live in safety.

Everyone has had a chuckle or a rant or both and the thread is going downhill backwards at an ever increasing rate of speed. It's okay with me if it gets locked up.

It's all the fault of Rep. Hoekstra (MI) and Rep. Franks (AZ). I was trying to make a superhero female turtle, but it got too late last night and we were laughing too much at some of the things our congressmen say. I'm going to change it again sometime soon.Tregs wrote:Hoi,
