Utah and Florida... The only other state that I ever travel to is Hawaii and they are "may issue" good for 1 year only.

BTW: the combination of Ut and Fl was still cheaper than Tx. We have to address this in 2011.

Be careful what you wish for. Some people are threatening to "fix" it by restricting reciprocity.

Lord knows that is the truth! If enough stink is raised and enough publicity advertising other States licenses instead of Texas, it could easily back fire on us. Sometimes it is best not to poke sticks at the cornered tiger. ;-)

I was talking about getting CHL fees dropped down to about half of what they are now. $70 sounds about right.

Isn't 70 bucks the renewal amount?

I think the Utah renewal is only $10 or $20.

Utah is $10 to renew, Texas is $70 for most people, less for those who serve us.

To carry in Texas (your home state) with a Texas CHL costs ~$20/month for your first five years, then ~$12/month for about 15 more years, then ~$6/month for the rest of your time. Paying for a cheaper license in another state is clearly a decision for each individual to make, but when making that decision, keep in mind that your money is not going to YOUR state, leaving little chance that you'll see any "return." Also, don't lose sight of the fact that our great state does not tax you on your income. There are certainly valuable services provided by our state, those require funding.

GC §411.185 says "The director by rule shall set the renewal fee in an amount that is sufficient to cover the actual cost to the department to renew a license."

So if they're obeying the law, Texas renewals are revenue neutral. They don't make money off them. Therefore, it doesn't affect funding for any other services if someone renews a Utah license instead of a Texas CHL.

I guess that I interpret that differently. If we presume that they are sufficiently covering the cost, that does not mean that they can't make money (IMO) on the fees - only that they are required to charge at least the cost that they incur. If I go out to dinner with $40 in my pocket, eat a $25 meal, then I have sufficient funds to cover the actual cost of the meal. Regardless, I'd rather support my state than another.

Major math error:
KFP wrote:...To carry in Texas (your home state) with a Texas CHL costs ~$20/month for your first five years, then ~$12/month for about 15 more years, then ~$6/month for the rest of your time...
Corrected Version:
To carry in Texas (your home state) with a Texas CHL costs ~$4/month for your first five years, then ~$3/month for about 15 more years, then ~$1.50/month for the rest of your time.

I guess that I shouldn't try to use my brain after a day on the lake!

While I do have my Texas CHL, it's main purpose now is to make the purchase of a firearm much easier. My actual authority to carry is my Texas Retired Peace Officer ID. It exempts me from all of TPC 46.02 and 46.03 .. very handy indeed and I do not have to worry about keeping it concealed. But I do, just to keep the questions to a minimum. Just my personal preference.

I think it's no big deal if someone has a clean record and gets a Utah CHL to save time and money.

I think it's a much bigger problem if criminals get a Utah CHL because they're ineligible to get a Texas CHL.

Tax deadbeats too.
