Procedure at the state capitol

The Capitol will soon become a "crime welcome" location with the adoption today of a new policy to quickly install metal detectors. Here is a link to the Austin-American Statesman article:

While not stated, I strongly suspect there is no CHL exemption.....

Guess I will not be visiting Our Capitol again.....ugh........

CHL's will be allowed to enter and DPS will be adopting appropriate procedures to all us to do so. As Keith pointed out, CHL's cannot be excluded as a matter of law.

That link doesn't quite work. I understand that Perry was the only one to vote against it. I wonder if (assuming there are CHL holders in the state rep and senators) they will continue to carry anyways. Reminds me of when they voted to require two license plates on every vehicle, and then John Kelso video taped half the officials vehicles leaving the capitol grounds, lacking a front plate. Darned hypocrites!

While not stated, I strongly suspect there is no CHL exemption.....

Per state law there cannot be a CHL exemption unless the legislature is in session and posted 30.06. So, they will have to provide a method for a CHL'er to carry past the metal detectors.

CHL's will be allowed to enter and DPS will be adopting appropriate procedures to all us to do so. As Keith pointed out, CHL's cannot be excluded as a matter of law.

Lt. Gov. Dewhurst has been instrumental in passage of many of the pro-gun bills in the Senate since his election. He was also a key player in getting the campus-carry bill to the floor for a vote in the Senate.

Appropriate??? What does that mean? Will I have to present 'papers' to enter my State Capitol? I can't walk in with my kids?

This is not "Great News" at all. This is setting a precedent and it will be happening all over the state.

I've never set foot in the capitol building. But it's my house, darnit, and I should be able to go there whenever I want, carrying/wearing/doing/whatever, so long as doing so would be legal while walking down Congress Avenue. Or Sixth Street, for that matter!

No Herr 06nop, you von't haf to show yer papers. The detailed procedures have not been set, but I expect it to be much like the Harris County Courthouses where I just show my FVC card (a/k/a frequent flier card) and walk around the metal detectors.

Sounds like separate entrances for CHLers from the sound of it, and since NO procedure is in place, who knows what might happen.

Except if there is NO procedure in place by then, CHLers will not be able to go into the Capitol building. And from the sound of it, there will be CHLers there.

There will more than likely not be metal detectors in place by the 17th since the article says within the next 45 days. And, let's face it, all that is required is to show your CHL to the person at the metal detector, and be allowed to walk around the unit, or even pass through and they ignore the beep. It ain't that hard to do.
