CHL Class - Their Gun or Mine?

Unless you are trying to win some sort of Prize its almost TOO easy to shoot and pass the CHL part.
I was practicing with a Rented 9mm at Eagle Peak the other Day that I had never shot.
Was it as good as a normally am? No, could I have passed the CHL test? heck yeah.

I carry a Glock because of a loaner during my first CHL.

I used the loaner Glock 19 and the free ammunition that came with it - cheaper than burning my own .45ACP!
OK, I dropped one point. Considering that I was shooting a strange plastic mushtrigger, I'll take that score.

The first CHL class I took was similar in set up and initially sounded odd to me, but after going through the qualification with them, I understood why they had set it up that way. In my experience, they did not want students to do anything other than pick up the gun, aim, fire, set the gun back down - nothing more. I was actually scolded for removing the empty mag after the gun ran dry before I set the gun down with the slide back after the first string of fire. They loaded the mags, they loaded the guns, the students just pulled the trigger. It was the assembly line approach to CHL courses (down to the Glocks in every color, as long as it's black).

You will not have any issues qualifying with the gun, the test is straightforward and easy.

Hmmmmm I thought that loading the mag and knowing how to drop the mag out, reload and re-inset was all a part of the 'gun awareness' and gun safety? Obviously not from the above post.

Not in the interest of time....

Needless to say, I was not impressed with the instruction they provided students.

Don't sweat the shooting test - if you have had any experience shooting any handgun whatsoever, you will pass the test no problem. I saw people pass that had never even shot any handgun before, let alone the one they turned up with, and had to be shown which way round to put the rounds in the mag. Amazing that anyone would be so unprepared but there ya go - all passed, as I say.

Sounds pretty much like the same thing the guy at Texas City Gun Range said to me about some of the CHL renewals he has seen. It is a little scary really.

I took my class at College of the Mainland. Lem is a great instructor in my book.
I brought my own P95 and did not have any problems; they let me use their ammo since they use leadless.

The biggest concern I would have is to have three mags (they happened to have a third one for me to use). The firing course is setup so that you have the correct number of rounds in your gun for the course being shot. i.e. load 5 shoot 5.

For the first round you will have three magazines loaded with 5, 10, and 5.

When in doubt, call the instructor. He will be able to tell you what he has in the safe and if he has a third mag for you.

Maybe those renewals are those ones who needed someone to load their magazines, etc, during the original class.

This was one of my biggest concerns. Since I only have two mags, I don't want to hold up the group while reloading. I was told that COM has enough mags to load the appropriate number of rounds for each course, as FlynJay states. Still planning to use the Glock and looking forward to it. I just hope that I don't like it too much! Might end up at another gun show looking for a deal......
