Doc Wesson over at the Gun Nation Podcast discussed this exact "problem" in a show back in May of '08 (I know, I'm slow in catching up on podcasts, as I just listened to that one a couple of weeks ago). Here's a link to that episode on his blog:

Good luck, and I like the invite to the range idea.

I managed to convert another girl last night. I mentioned shooting and she said she had shot a couple of guns but didn't like them, and that guns were "scary". I knew she came from a more country-style family, so I thought that was kind of weird (I'm assuming her father or brothers let her shoot a deer rifle or shotgun and the recoil got her. She's not very big).

I pressed a little farther and it turns out she had a friend who accidentally shot his toe off because "the safety didn't work" Image

So I got to explain about the 4 Rules and how it never would have happened if the shooter had been using his brain. I gave her the example that if she had been watching me dig a hole and I accidentally whacked her face with the shovel, she'd be blaming the shovel instead of me :smilelol5:

Now she wants to go shooting with me :hurry:

This is EXACTLY what I mentioned earlier. She's not liberal or left wing in any way, just a good Texas girl that didn't have a set opinion one way or the other, but through a bad experience had the idea that guns are bad and just needed a push in the right direction

I did exactly that! Beautiful leather holsters. I just love crisp, clean stitches on a handmade leather holster. Very nice, Shorts!

That's how Mrs. joe817 learned about the hobby, and I took her to "target practice" when we were dating in 1968. Little did she know that my pistols at the time were a Colt 1911, a Remington 1890 single action in .44-40(grandaddy to a .44 magnum), and a Colt 1873 SAA in .32-20. She shot them all, but didn't enjoy the the Remington or the 1911.
Yep I think introducing it that way works pretty well. Heck, I bought my fiance a Walther PPK/S for Christmas and she got that before she got her ring. Fortunately she didn't have to use it to get the ring. "rlol" I had originally gotten her a Kimber Crimson Carry Ultra, but she didn't like it so much. We took a tour of some local gunshops and walked out with one she picked out. :thumbs2:

The "range date" idea is certainly the best in my mind. I will make that move for sure!

not to get political, but the statement pertaining to "pretty far left and East Texas gal", in my experienced opinion, is an oxymoron.

oh, and the range date thing is the best solution, hands down!

Can you enlighten the rest of us as to what you mean?
Do you mean you bought a handgun where the safety is the opposite of the
standard "up for safe, down to rock and roll"?

By the way, I just found out a gal I've known for a while is CHL!
I hadn't known that until yesterday. I told her I'm CHL too, so our
first date may be a range date!!

So the gun question is out of the way for us.

You might say we're opposites, though.
I'm a semi-auto guy, she's a revolver gal!! :-)

Haha, in fact, YES, my Beretta is UP for rock 'n roll :smilelol5:

Florida is a strange state though, always changing opinions, lots of folks from other parts of the country, as well as from around the world. Lots of ideas flying around. Not a bad thing IMO.

I agree in every other case, but for her it is synonymous, which is why her and I get along!

Gosh LT, thank you and the Mods as well!

I may be speaking out of turn, but I think most of us prefer to see discussions kept at a civil nature, which you all are marvelous at doing! :tiphat: :thumbs2:

I have to agree that this has been a fun read, and a step back in time(for me).

The range date idea never had to be suggested to me, I've been doing that since August of 08. That's when I started getting into handguns pretty intensely. In the last year, I've taken 4-5 little ladies to the pistol range. All but one enjoyed herself.

Several weeks ago, I ran into a girl I went to highschool with. We exchanged info, and decided to go to a movie. I left work the evening of the movie, and had some errands to run; consequently, I never got to go home to change first. I called her, swung by and got her, and then went back to my apartment so I could shower and change.

I've lived by myself for a while now, so I didn't think anything about unholstering and securing my pistol. She was in the living room, I was in the bedroom. No big deal. Told her to make herself at home and I jumped in the shower.

Moment of truth (or a face-palm moment, lol). I was changing in the bedroom, and she walked in as I was reholstering. That took a little explaining, but she was very cool, and even curious about the license and the licensing process. Opened up a lot of new conversation paths right off the bat.
