Surprise, surprise, surprise.

This kind of thing just sucks the wind out of your sails.

The reality is that military bases are really soft targets like schools. Personal weapons are generally heavily restricted, and while there is security when you go on base, cars really aren't checked very often for weapons, particularly cars of soldiers stationed on the base. You end up with lots of unarmed people. So it is no wonder these guys could shoot so many before being shot down.

Another reporter theorized that there must have been large shootouts on base between the "bad guys" and all the soldiers on base who would all be carrying firearms because it is "wartime".

People ask me why I quit working as a journalist and I'm thinking of telling them "because I was too smart and well informed"
That's why I dropped my journalism minor from my degree plan. The short, acute exposure to the overwhelming collective idiocy of the media was sickening to me.

And to the Islamic references, being Islamic does not equal radical fundamentalist jihadi whacko. The name is just a name until proven otherwise, right?

Shooter is allegedly Jordanian; however, name is very common........

News says he was a mental-health professional??????

Was anyone else NOT very comforted or reassured by Obama's comments? He certainly didn't seem very "horrified". Guess when you haven't been in the military, you don't understand.........

Ciao ya'll.....rg

I took a short nap this afternoon, and woke up to my wife saying, "Don't worry, they're okay! There's been a shooting at Hood, but the kids are fine."

She knew the first thing I would do after waking up was turn on the news, so she wanted to let me know our son and daughter-in-law were fine. He had actually called her before she even saw the news (smart move; he knows his momma!)

Good catch. Looking back thru various posts and report, the name reported varied slightly, e.g. Malik Hassan, Malique, Nadal, etc...

Can't believe this happened on one of the only 3 days I was not working there this month. My buddies are still on lockdown as far as I know.
Happened about 2 or 3 miles from my office.
That unit is going to be a mess for a very long time. My heart goes out to the families of the deceased, the wounded and their families as well.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by today's shootings on Fort Hood. What has happened to so many innocent people is truly a tragedy. Brenda and I drove up to Fort Hood today. We were on post at the time of the incident, but had no idea what was going on at the time. We watched and listened to the many many sirens from the emergency vehicles from the Main Post Exchange at 1:45PM as we loaded our packages into the vehicles. It wasn't until we got back home that we heard the terrible news. We were fortunate to not be in harms way and were able to get home safely.

I grew up in Belton. My mother does relief work at Darnall Hospital on base every so often. Thank God she was not there.

Some would call this premature, but this is the first Terrorist attack on American soil since September 11th.
A class of our soldiers headed to Iraq were murdered by at the very least, a MAJOR in the United States Army.
Let us not forget the foiled attack in Dallas in weeks past.

I was a sophomore at Belton High School the last time this happened. I was young and did not realize the implications and the distance from them did little to influence me. I was too young to enlist at that time, knowing that my family is not out of reach makes me rethink my years since.

I plan on making the drive home tonight to give blood at Scott & White.

This will not weaken our resolve, I wish I could say the same for our politicians.

The latest I know: (from TV of course)

The alleged shooter was from Jordan, studied there, Damascus University. He was a mental health professional. (a doctor) He used privately owned handguns. No word on caliber, or who made the weapons.
