Some people - maybe a lot of people - are uncomfortable around guns and the people who carry them. Well, if people are carrying guns illegally then maybe they ought to be uncomfortable. But CHL holders are a totally different breed and they deserve to be respected by the general public. CHL holders have undergone a screening process by government on all levels that far exceeds anything the average citizen experiences. People should think of CHL holders as "government certified good guys" That alone should make business owners welcome them in their shops.

My wife thinks that having a CHL and carrying is the stupidest thing I've ever done. There is a guy we know who somehow slipped through the cracks (kinda mentally weird) and got a CHL issued to him and she uses him as a comparison to me. Doesn't bother me a bit though. So, no respect from her for any CHL holder.

I look at self defense/CHL kinda like the lottery. A guy at work plays the lottery religiously, and has never won anything to speak of. Says his wife always nags him about playing and how he ought to just give her the money instead of throwing it away. He tells her that if he ever hits "tha big one" she'll be the first one with her hand out. I look at the whole self defense/CHL thing the same way. Just like his chances of hitting "tha big one", I'll probably never encounter a real situation to where I need to draw my weapon, but boy is my wife going to be glad I'm armed if we do encoutner one. Maybe she'd change her mind then.

Now maybe people will start to believe that Carter's are gouging people?

I understand supply and demand but that is just plain wrong, maybe if we refused to pay the price and left it sitting on the shelf then maybe, just maybe the price will drop back to being reasonable?

Have faith Kevinf2349. The elusive .380 was spotted at an Wal-Mart store(I believe) in San Angelo a few days ago. I've yet to see that here in the DFW area....yet.

9mm ammo was taken off the endanger species list in late July. .45 in August. Perhaps September is the month for .380. And it's just going to get better. Ammo prices are already for coming down. In April I paid $27.50 for a box of 50 American Eagle FMJ. In mid July....$8.97 at Wal-Mart in Fort Worth. So things ARE getting better. It's just like waiting for your CHL...you just gotta be patient.

I don't know anything about Carters Country and maybe they do gouge on some things, but I can tell you from personal experience in the DFW area, several are selling it for that amount and some even more. I can't believe it is so expensive. I bought a thousand rounds about one year ago online for about 9 bucks a box delivered. I wish I had bought five thousand rounds of it. I would be making a killing right now selling it.

Meanwhile...back at the ranch. I just found out that a feller I have known as a business associate for almost 20 years is anti-concealed carry. I about had a conniption fit when he told me this. He knows I carry concealed so I ask him if he was afraid of me. He said no. His reason???? He said I am different so he isn't worried about me getting mad and shooting him...LOL. This all just came up two days ago!!! Yesterday I emailed him the statistics of crime that are on another thread here. His response???? He said that only proves that the percentage of population of CHL holders is a tiny portion of the general population. So then I email him and say no...it proves that CHL holders are highly unlikely to commit a violent crime. He then starts in on the need for a CHL by asking me where I hang out that is so dangerous. Good gosh...he is frustrating the crud out of me. Mostly because I have known this guy for so long. It causes me to be too emotional about it all.

Here is the kicker to it all. What started all this was a Utah CHL class we put on for all our employees...BY the Way...big thumbs up and thanks to Lind at crossfire. So anyway...I allowed my employees to use their personal accounts and we are deducting the cost to them at 25 bucks a week. I tell my controller(Mr anti-carry) about the deduction and he says to me..."So I assume you told everyone they can't bring guns to work"...LOL...I about flipped. I said no, and made reverence to temperature extremes in hell. He says...great, now when they get mad at each other, they will just pull out their guns and start blasting. He then quips about why they need guns and they shouldn't be hanging out anywhere that dangerous. Of coarse I tried to explain all the talking points to all these questions but at 70 years old, I don't think he is gonna change his mind. I out rank him...LOL...so he loses the debate and there will be no anti-gun agenda at any company I own. I would like to change his mind as he does own a small percentage of the company and I hate just shoving it up his nose. So I plan to start sending him every news story I can find where a CHL holder prevented a murder, robbery or worse. I guess baby steps... .

After all these years of him knowing I carry and he even knew me when I went through my episode of shooting in self defense. he never once expressed any disagreement with my carry of a weapon. I guess he was afraid I would get mad and shoot him .

I feel your frustrations, because I too have experienced that mindset. You can't break through a closed mind that is as strong as a steel door. I think you're on the right track in sending him articles putting CHL holders in a positive light.

I hope your employees appreciate what you've done for them, for I sure do!

I've had a few conversations with those that "just don't get it" as well. I ask them, "Well, do you have a fire extinguisher in your home?" Most will answer, "Yes, of course." I ask, "Why? The chance of there being a fire in your house is really remote." They will usually answer, "Yeah, but you never know. Better safe than sorry." to which I reply, "Exactly, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, huh?! What would you do if someone kicked your front door in at 3am and your family is asleep inside? Wouldn't you want a fighting chance to live if they are armed and intent on harm, and wouldn't you want the same for your family? If the good guys had no defensive tools, then only criminals would have guns. How would that be?"

Having a CHL means nothing about the character of person. Just like a badge means nothing about the character of the cop that carries it.

Actions are the only thing that speaks to character, not any piece of plastic or metal that a government gives out.

I have no intention of starting a debate on this. I agree that a CHL doesn't say much about a person's moral character any more than a good conduct medal says a person can't still be a jerk. But that wasn't the point I wanted to make anyway. I'm talking about our standing in the public arena and the perception the public has of people with CHL's. While, and I agree with you on this point, a CHL doesn't guarantee that you are moral, or even nice, it does signify that you are a law abiding citizen, you have kept your nose clean and stayed out of trouble, you play by the rules and you are probably more aware of the issues that we as citizens face in this country today. I think that is worthy of some respect; and I think some acknowledgement from the public and from merchants is appropriate. I wasn't talking about morality at all.
