Gun Control Vs DWI
I have just read another story on the Houston Chronicle where someone else was killed by a drunk driver. It really is contradictory of our gun control folks that everytime we have another homicide by a shooter that they all want to ban guns, which we all know will do no good. But how come no one ever screams about the DWI laws and how ineffective they really are?
Our legislators need to do something productive for once and make drinking and driving in Texas very painful. First offense should carry no less than 6 months of acutal jail time, 2nd 1 year and 3rd should be the last time some idiot gets the opportunity to get behind a wheel. If injuries are involved punishment should start at no less that 3 years. If a death is involved the driver should never see the light of day again.
Liberals want to scream about taking guns away, but no one screams about doing something about drinking and driving.
Sorry folks, I really hate people that drink and drive.

You miss the point. They're not interested in saving lives. Their goal is to reduce the ability of good guys to resist crime and tyranny.
If they wanted to save lives, they would be pushing for more liberal concealed carry laws to get more guns in the hands and holsters of more good guys in more places.

You reckon that the liberals are more prone to experience a DWI than a trip to the gun range?

More importantly, mandatory jail time for DWI might make a lot of them miss the next legislative session.boomerang wrote:You miss the point. They're not interested in saving lives. Their goal is to reduce the ability of good guys to resist crime and tyranny.
IMO, bring the limit back up to .10, and make first offense minimum 90 days actual confinement and 1 year suspension, second offense a mandatory 1 year minimum jail time with five years license suspension. Third offense, revoke the license and jail them until the forget what a car looks like. If BAC is over .15, add an enhancer that would increase both jail and suspension time. Then make the penalty for driving with a license suspended or revoked for DUI actual confinement for at least the remainder of the suspension term or five years for permanently revoked licenses.
The problem isn't as much a lack of catching drunks: it's that they're catching and releasing the same ones repeatedly.

We need stronger DUI laws like a 3 day waiting period on car sales and alcohol sales and a federal background check ran through MADD before one could purchase alcohol.
Children are getting ahold of cars and alcohol and this needs to be stopped.

Why dont we just ban cars, or at least make it so that a car cannot exceed 20mph. not only would that save lives but it would also help the environment by reducing green house gasses and lower our dependance on foreign oil!flb_78 wrote:We need stronger DUI laws like a 3 day waiting period on car sales and alcohol sales and a federal background check ran through MADD before one could purchase alcohol.

We'll also ban automatic cars and cars that look "military" like. They should also only have a 3 gallon capacity so folks don't go on dangerous driving sprees.hheremtp wrote:Why dont we just ban cars, or at least make it so that a car cannot exceed 20mph. not only would that save lives but it would also help the environment by reducing green house gasses and lower our dependance on foreign oil!flb_78 wrote:We need stronger DUI laws like a 3 day waiting period on car sales and alcohol sales and a federal background check ran through MADD before one could purchase alcohol.

Don'f forget, we need to implement some sort of smart car technology so that the car can only be driven by the person(s) who bought it!flb_78 wrote:We'll also ban automatic cars and cars that look "military" like. I have a black car. Perhaps I should bury it in the back yard.
