Defaulted student loan

#1

Post by Signel »

I've taken my CHL class and I have everything in order. However, I have one loan that was charged off a long time ago. I am in good standing with all my other student loans.

I need to know how the state determines how to approve or deny a CHL based on defaulted loans.

Is there a way for me to check this before sending in my packet? I am dealing with the loan, but I'd like to get the CHL sooner rather than later if possible.

According to what we were told in instructor class, the state sends notice of your application to the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation. If they respond that you are in default, then you are denied.

Any appeal must be taken up with the Corp. DPS will only issue if the Corp states you are no longer in default.

If you are 'dealing' with the loan try to get a payment agreement, that should take it out of default status.

Go to the TGSLC website: http://www.tgslc.org/abouttg/contact.cfm

They can tell you what your status is and what, if anything, you need to do.

I just wanted to doublecheck.

I called and they told me I am in good standing in their national database and their texas database. Is there any place else the state will check for student loans?

Otherwise, I'll send my packet in asap.

Thanks for the help so far.

Nope;

Texas Government Code
§411.172. Eligibility.

(a) A person is eligible for a license to carry a concealed
handgun if the person:

(12) has not been finally determined to be in default on a
loan made under Chapter 57, Education Code;

Texas Education Code

§ 57.11. TEXAS GUARANTEED STUDENT LOAN CORPORATION. (a)
The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation is created to
administer the programs authorized by this chapter.
