My son is under 21 but in the military, were finishing up his application. My question is on the affidavit you have to inital that your atleast 21 years of age, and that you can legally under federal and state law purchase a handgun. should he just not inital these and leave them blank? called DPS and the lady said to sign it anyways and just write a note next to it, not sure if thats right.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: under 21 and filling out affidavit
I have not had anyone under 21 in any of my CHL classes, but under no circumstances would I suggest that he initial any statement that isn't true. It would be a good idea to put a cover letter in the application packet pointing out that he's in the military and that's why he didn't initial that part of the affidavit. DPS should see be able to figure that out anyway, but a cover letter would help avoid someone glancing at the missing initials and setting the application aside.

It might be worth a call to Austin. They might like to get a call that isn't asking why a license is delayed. Give them a little variety.

Hello....
I have had students under 21 in class more than once. Austin told me
they can come to class within 6 months of becoming 21. They mail
in their application once they are 21. Just prior to mailing their packet
they initial the affidavit on the line relating to 21 years of age.
Of course military can come to class at 18 yrs. Copies of current
orders must be attached to their application.
Good luck!

Re: under 21 and filling out affidavit
Instead of an initial, write 'Note 1', or 'See Attached' or something to that effect. Be sure to include copies of current orders, and like Cotton said, a Cover Page stating under which provision he was applying under probably wouldn't hurt.

Re: under 21 and filling out affidavit
According to the legal dept at DPS, Make a note as earlier stated "see attached". DO NOT initial the 21 question.
Attach a statement that he is curently active military and his age, etc. (does not have to be too fancy), have that notarized, as well and attach with the affidavit.
hope this helps in the future with other CHLI's, also.
