In corrections, we wear out more handcuffs than most street police will ever see. Our policy is that we never apply handcuffs without a backup, because it's simply too dangerous. The exception is if you're already in an active fight, at which time there are no rules. And, I must point out, during such a time you're going to need both hands, leaving zero hands free for applying cuffs. If I handcuff someone by myself, he's probably going to be unconscious first.

If you can safely handcuff someone without backup, then he's totally compliant. And if he's totally compliant, you have no need to handcuff him.

Handcuffs are a dangerous tool, even in the hands of people who have been properly trained in their use. They are a pain compliance device, not just a restraint. There is a very real risk of vascular or nerve damage from improper use. Users have to know about proper keyway orientation, and setting the double-lock (and of course, one should never apply handcuffs without having a cuff key).
:iagree:

I asked my martial arts instructor about it and was shown a few very simple techniques that would make being handcuffed really hard unless the cop wanted to knock you cold out first. Really only for kidnap/extreme situations since hopefully there will be two cops and one will have a gun still on you.

Handcuffs sound like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Your handgun being pulled states that you are in fear of losing your life and you are protected for using it.
Handcuffs state that you were no longer in danger and were detaining someone (you must put your gun away to use them).

This goes back to my theory......don't ever pull your gun unless you plan to use it. When you DO use it, use it to it's maximum potential so they cannot testify
against you. Using handcuffs will pretty much guarantee you a lawsuit, because you have ultimately saved the person and given them the opportunity to live
and testify against you.

Hold them at gunpoint, shoot 'em or don't pull your gun at all. Handcuffs are a bad idea.

I think it's a good idea to carry handcuffs in a little leather case. It's a handy place to hang your CHL badge!!! "rlol"

yeah, but seriously, don't do it.

I just realized that I must sound like a Rambo-type by making this statement. I hope everyone realizes what I'm trying to say.

Well I have a CHL because I want to be able to carry a handgun should the unfortunate event arise I must defend my life or that of my family. If an avenue of retreat is available I will take it. The use of my handgun is a last resort. I am not interested in rushing in to detain a BG. The further away he is from me the better. Carrying handcuffs is a terrible idea for a CHL holder. I think its about as good of an idea as getting a CCW badge. I bet any LEO who found a CHL to be carrying and had a set of cuffs is going to get one hell of a hard time. No thanks. :tiphat:

Dont do it! you may have the right techically. But can you afford to be wrong? Let the police do the handcuffing. Lots of things can go real wrong if you do not know what you are doing and dont have the training on how to do it safely and effectively. Then comes the civil part of it. If you do someting to injure the person you are cuffing you can be held civillaly liable. It is not worth it.
If you over react, then you have the criminal crap to worry about to,starting with assault, then false imprisionment, it just goes bad from there. If you see a crime in progress your best weapon is a cell phone. Call 911. If a persons life is in danger and you have a weapon and of course the CHL, use your best judgement on how to handle. Most of the time a gun is all you need, just be right again, being wrong has consequences.

Dont carry em. I was an LEO for 15 years, I have cuffs, and I don't carry them for the reasons stated.

Leave your handcuffs in the bedroom
It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end-to-end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them

I still have mine left over from when I worked in LE. They stay locked up in my gunsafe. One reason is because I have 5 pair and they aren't cheap. The other reason is because when I as still working and had them on my duty belt people I knew would come over and almost always pull them out and start playing with them. One time I went to check the mailbox when a friend was over. She had handcuffed herself in my absence and could not get out of them. They were very tight and cutting circulation off to her hands (my mail box was down by the apartment office about a 5 min walk one way). ANYway they aren't something to take lightly and unless you have very good training I would not recommend trying to hook someone up with them. If you had enough reason to produce your weapon it means the person was dangerous, your putting yourself at way more risk by trying to cuff them. I've said this before criminals practice how to resist arrest in jail.

Ask yourself this when deciding about cuffs:

- DO you know how to load your cuffs?
- Do you know how to handcuff someone who is too big to touch their hands behind their back?
- Is it acceptable to perform a wall cuffing? As in "Put your hands on the wall."
- Which position is it best to handcuff a known threat?
- What the heck are you going to do when the other person fights you can tucks their hands under their arms?
- Why use hindged cuffs instead of chained?

This is just what I can think of in 3 minutes of typing.... :tiphat:
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

With a nail gun.

Through the rookie's belt while he's not looking.
