I did a little research and came up with the following links. It sounds like they have a pretty good description of the thug from the survivor, who is under protective custody - probably why they were/are so tight-lipped.

Like I said, the perp will be caught and punished. But only a gun could have saved any of the victims.
A gun that the laws of IL forbade any of them from having (unless they were one of a handful of Chicago public officials that is such Aldermen and a few others).

Again, I disagree.
There is no reason to believe that any of these women (or anyone else present) would have been armed and willing to intervene.
These women were compliant to the point of allowing themselves to be "bound". One was 22 yrs. old, the oldest 42, and the rest in their 30's. I do not know the physical condition of any of the victims, but chances are....some (or all of them) could have fought back or run.
I can only imagine they thought they would not be harmed if they simply did what the BG told them to do. That is probably wise up to a point.
Personally, I will never allow myself to be bound, kneel on the floor facing away, or remain still if any shooting starts.
The key to surviving most attacks is a strong will to fight back, to survive, to use your head. A gun might have been a useful tool in this case, we don't know. But day in and day out, a proper mindset (fight back with whatever you have) will serve you best.

I agree with you in principle. My mindset is that as soon as I recognise that there is a robbery where I cannot physically remove myself immediately. I will mostly likely use all means necessary whereby I can achieve that goal of gaining distance. I will never be the one to say that I will wait and see if the BG will leave peacefully. This is because that is wishful thinking because the person came armed and ready to repel any resistance. And since opportunity only knocks once, then I will be taking it whenever it arises. No guessing if they will leave with no problems or if they will leave no witnesses.
If you don't stand for something, then you will fall for anything.

This is from the article above.
The killer of five women at a Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park made sexual advances on at least one of the victims before the slayings and may have targeted a women's shop to avoid confrontation with men, a source said Monday.
Just reminder to us ladies we must be aware and responsible for our own safety but the one's here already know that. For some reason of all the news stories I've heard and read lately this one really gets to me. I guess it's just the fact that it reminds me of how many of my friends and family think it will never happen to them because "I don't go to 'bad' places". I'm sure none of these women considered going to work or shopping during the day going to a "bad" place where something like this would happen. I am working on a email I may send to friends about awareness and self defense. When I'm done I'll post it for some input from all of you.

Re: 5 women slain in store
This is what bothers me more than anything. The last time I tried to give my sister a heads-up about a serial rapist in the Dallas-area, she replied that she doesn't have anything to worry about since she lives in a nice, up-scale suburb. I can't get it through her head that municipal boundaries aren't a deterrent to criminals.texasgirl wrote:I guess it's just the fact that it reminds me of how many of my friends and family think it will never happen to them because "I don't go to 'bad' places".
