church carry

I thought you could carry in church if a legal CCW.
A buddy (water fountain lawyer) told me that it was illegal to carry in church?

There are a couple of preachers here in the forum that might tell your "water fountain lawyer" something different... ;-)

You can carry in a church unless it is 30.06 posted. The original CHL law made churches off-limits, but it was amended.

The church has to be 30.06 posted or you have to have been given verbal warning not to carry there. Most people read the wording in the statute that says you are prohibited from carry in church and fail to read further down about the 30.06 posting.

Hmmm, now you all have me thinking.... Maybe it's time for me to get my preachers into a CHL class. Those robes could cover a S&W 500 with no problem! ;-)

This is a touchy subject at my church. A few years ago, several people were killed in our church by a gunman that in the end took his own life. When we moved our membership to this church, a couple weeks ago, I asked about it. I mentioned to the man conducting our new members class(who incidentally was shot by the gunman) that I noticed the church was not 30.06 posted. He said nope! When I asked about the churches policy on LEGAL concealed carry his response was "we don't ban it but do discourage it".

I recall quite a few preachers who were very upset when the law originally passed banning CHL in churches. My father was a preacher of 35 years when that law came into effect. He never posted simply because he thought it would look ugly on the church. He is very uncomfortable with guns anyway.

I wonder if your church is the one I am thinking about. I'm guessing the gunman was not a CHL. So if a CHL had been there during the shooting someone could have saved lives. Obviously he has been through something tragic, just surprised he discourages lawful carry for protection in light of what happened.

I go to a little country church that's basically in the middle of nowhere. It's right off a highway, but it's not a busy highway. Not much around there, but there could be all sorts of not-so-wonderful people on the road, passing by.

My pastor could not care less if we pack at church. If you can legally carry, then he's just fine with you bringing your gun. Our Bible study teacher does just that *grins* He got his plastic in the mail right around the time that I took my class. I don't know if anybody else in the church carries, though. It's not something that comes up very often.

Then again...there are some people in the congregation who would pass out and choke on their own outrage if they knew that people in the church are carrying. What they don't know can't hurt them. Might save their lives if something horrible happens, though.

Isn't that a great irony?

I have come to the conclusion that people who carry weapons, whether CHL holders, off-duty or plainclothes law enforcement, or any other person who can carry legally, are a net benefit to society. The fact that they may be in a crowd deters some criminals.

Water fountain lawyer is mistaken.
