County Sheriff's Office

#1

Post by Overthehill »

Our County Sheriff with 50 so years in the Sheriff's office, quite a few of those as Sheriff, is retiring on the 31st. I dropped by the office today to wish him a great retirement only to find two generic handgun in a red circle with a red line through it signs on the main entrance doors. No 30-06 or 30-07, as are posted on our county courthouse but still enough to stop me from entering. While the signs have no force of law, to my knowledge, a Sheriff's Office is probably not the place to begin the discussion while armed. Our county is quite conservative and the Sheriff is a big supporter of 2nd Amendment rights just evidently not in his office or courthouse. I have known this man for all of my 70 years on earth and will be seeing him around before long and even though he will be retired will find out what exactly was going through his mind to post these things or if the new appointed Sheriff had got started on changes early.

IF the man were my friend I'd have the talk with him ASAP before he retires. Something is very wrong when those who are sworn by oath to uphold and support our constitutions (state and federal) and fairly and impartially enforce the laws written under same make a conscious choice not to.

If he's unaware of the laws it's well past time he retires and he needs to be set straight as soon as reasonably possible.

Those red slash signs are intended for those without LTC's. Kinda like the TABC Unlicensed Possession signs. I'm quite sure that, since you are friends with the sheriff, any discussion that they would prohibit even you with an LTC, would not be terribly unpleasant. Might go something like, "Uh, didn't you see the sign?" I doubt they would prone you out or even draw on you since I'm also sure they're aware that you and the sheriff are friends.
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

:iagree: When I see one of those signs, I'm of the opinion that it is intended for unlicensed possession of a firearm, and I walk right past it.

What, do they have a lot of problems with UCAW AT the Sheriff's Office in your county? And if so, do they REALLY think posting a sign is going to help? Or was this aimed at that group of long gun toters who will not be named that like to do 'events' at LEO locations?
