"regular guys"or not, I don't care how popular you are or how big your salary is, I think it's unnecessary to disarm the good guys. If a bad guy decides to show up in a room full of armed citizens PLUS secret service, the VP should feel safe knowing that the bad guy will have about 200 holes in him before anything bad happens. Me personally, I won't be listening to him speak. I won't be going anywhere that I cant carry my firearm. It's essentially the nations largest get together for gun owners and they won't let law abiding legal gun owners carry guns because someone who's supposedly pro 2A thinks its too "dangerous"? thats liberal logic right there... one of the safest places I could think to be is in a room full of law abiding armed citizens... just my 2 cents

It is the Secret Service that sets the rules on who gets to carry within the exclusion zone, not the state of Texas, the NRA, City of Dallas, or Trump/Pence.

Look at it this way, imagine what a prime opportunity it would be for some rabid gun hater to take a pot shot at the VP AT the NRA Annual Convention.

The campaign ads would write themselves.

Federal law gives the Secret Service the authority. As others noted, this came up at the Republican convention in 2016:

"Title 18 United States Code Sections 3056 and 1752 provides the Secret Service authority to preclude firearms from entering sites visited by our protectees, including those located in open-carry states," Secret Service spokesman Robert K. Hoback said in a statement. "Only authorized law enforcement personnel working in conjunction with the Secret Service for a particular event may carry a firearm inside of the protected site."

1752 in part:
(B)  of a building or grounds where the President or other person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting;  or
(C)  of a building or grounds so restricted in conjunction with an event designated as a special event of national significance; ...

VP Pence does not have a say in the matter. The Secret Service decides and they are not going to allow anyone to carry.

But is it just the hall where he is speaking that is off limits or the entire Convention Center? That is what I want to know.

In a room full of people, how do you know who is a "good guy"? Does it come stamped on their forehead or something? Just because someone has a carry permit does not necessarily make them a good guy. Look at the recent shootings... many of those folks passed a background check and purchased their guns legally... but were they "good guys"?

What if the convention was being held in a state like Arizona that has constitutional carry? How would you vet the "good guys"? Do you believe that every single person in attendance at the NRA convention is a "good guy"? That whole argument is weak to begin with. Many of the recent shooters were folks who passed background checks and had their firearms legally... in other words, vetted as "good guys"...

If we can't trust an LTC holder or an NRA member, then what the heck are we supporting anymore? Sorry, if I felt that way, I would not be an NRA member or on an LTC forum. I'm sorry, do we support the 2nd or don't we? Sounds like only when it's convenient.... that's like saying well I support the 2nd amendment but I won't allow you to have guns around me. This is crazy! I'm just amazed I have to admit.

Anybody , including the President who says they support 2A, but would not allow an upstanding citizen to have a gun around them, does not really support the 2nd amendment. The idea is worse than the Hollywood elite with security....at least they are honest about not wanting you and I to have a gun.

Maybe I'm the only one feels that way... that's fine...just really sad because it means the battle and the war is already lost.

You never answered my question... How do you know who the "good guy" is? How about this scenario... NRA member openly carrying a rifle per Texas law? Would you let him in the arena where the VP is speaking?

Your idea of vetting a person is that they are trust worthy simply because they are an NRA member? Anyone with $40 can become a NRA member! I'm fine with being in a room of license holders, but then again, I am not in a position where I could be a target of some whack job with different political views! When you are charged with the protection of the VP, you can't "trust" anybody.

Let me give you some names of people who were vetted as good guys through a far more thorough background investigation than what you get for your LTC... The gov trusted these guys: Eric Snowden, Aldrich Ames, John Walker, Robert Hanssen... Passing a background check does not automatically make you a "good guy".

Let me answer your question. I don't know that every guy with a gun is good. That is the price of freedom. A very few will not be good. Does that mean we punish everyone because of a few? Sounds familiar.

Again....I understand the SS has the legal right to ban guns. Why create this situation at a gun rights conference? It's insanely poor decision making.

OK, now I am getting really confused. I am coming up from Fort Hood on 4 May, but am NOT going to the Leadership Forum. I am only going to the exhibits at KBH Convention Center. I don't want to drive from Fort Hood ~3 hours to downtown Dallas, spend the evening after the exhibits close in downtown Dallas and then spend Friday night in a hotel and have the choice of either NOT carrying or of having to take the risk of locking my firearm in the car while I am at KBH.

Are we OK to carry if we are NOT going to the Leadership Forum, but will be in the exhibit hall and will NRA put this out officially?

Cameron Kasky, posted a photo on Twitter of an NRA notice stating that firearms won’t be allowed at the convention because of Vice President Pence’s attendance.

Kasky is one of the students who began to organize in favor of gun reform after the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 people dead.

Knife Rights will be providing complimentary storage for knives and other prohibited items. They are located by the ticket scanners.

ETA: Unfortunately, it does specifically say no storage for firearms.

The NRA has no say whatsoever on the subject of Secret Service restrictions during Pence's visit... Unless, of course, they want to dis-invite him.

I hate it too, but it is what it is. Thankfully, it's only the arena that will be affected.

The arena existed long before there was a convention center. It was known as Memorial Auditorium. I've been there many times over the years. As a kid, we went to the Ringling Brother's Circus (yep... three rings) there, as well as the Ice Capades. That's also where my high school graduation was held. They needed a BIG auditorium to graduate over 1100 kids.

10+ years ago, I took my adult son to a Stars hockey game there, too.
