I like Ikea as well, we are in the Frisco one quite often, but almost never on weekends unless there is no other option. That place is a madhouse on the weekends and almost a ghost town during the week.

They have some crap yes, but they have some very good stuff too. My entire office is Ikea, as is the entertainment center, the kitchen table, our mattress, various bookshelves throughout the house, my workbench in the garage (it was originally billed as a kitchen island with a butcher block top but it didnt fit in the new house), two poang chairs in my media room, our kitchen utensils, three sizes of glasses and all kinds of other various stuff around the house. My sister in law also did her entire day care from Ikea as well. Its like anywhere else, you have to know what you are buying and many times you can get a good deal.

As for the bags... well we have been shopping at Ikea for years as you can see above and they just started charging for the plastic bags about the same time they came out with the big blue bag which is identical to the yellow one they give you to walk about the store with except you keep the blue one. That started about 1- 2 years ago maybe? I know when we first moved to TX in Jan 06 you could still get regular plastic "wal-mart" bags as I call them as well as paper to wrap your glass goods and cardboard carriers for bottle like items.

IIRC, it also started about the same time some CA communities started banning plastic bags. So while it might be up to speed with the Scandinavian culture now, Ikea has not always been like that in the states, its a very recent thing.

Oh and I too laugh at the sign that tells their employees they cannot carry at work.

I also give Ikea a +1. I like it. My entire office/music/computer room is from Ikea. It is very nice.

I was at the Ikea in Houston twice a couple of weeks ago. I didn't notice any reserved spaces for hybrid parking, but I think it's a good idea to propagate. They were not posted 30.06, and I didn't even see a gunbusters sign. So, the G19 stayed on my hip, and the LCP stayed in my pocket.

Just to mention, I did not have to pay for plastic bags.

I personally hate to go there, but just because I don't like shopping and I don't like spending money and this place requires 2 hours just to make it through the place. I don't like the maze-like layout (we go to the one in Round Rock, been to he one in Houston before). I am a get in, get what you need, get out kind of guy. Ikea is not suited to that.

The 'reserved for hybrids' parking spaces crack me up. Would be smarter to just make them too narrow to get a land yacht into them. I'm not a fan of large SUVs as general-use vehicles either, just so you know. However this kind of thing does tend to alienate customers.

I go to home depot all the time in my Miata.

Normally I don't buy lumber though. You can fit a surprising amount of stuff in the trunk.

FWIW we own a mid-size SUV (Honda Pilot) and it hauls stuff just fine, especially with a trailer. What I am talking about is the stay-home mom who drives around shopping and getting her hair done and that kind of thing in a Suburban every day. You don't need a gigantic vehicle for most uses. Use one when you need it. I am all about sizing your vehicle appropriately for the task you most normally undertake. If you most normally haul 8 other people then you need a Suburban. If you most normally just haul your self and one or two kids then get a midsize sedan and help us all fit into parking spaces, less wear and tear on the roads, less CO2 emissions, less fuel demand, it's all good for everyone.

Mrs. Anygun and I use our Suburban all the time for just the two of us. It fits just fine. That dual A/C keeps pumping out that cold air. I figure I am doing my part to help warm up the polar bears.

Not too fond of the whole "hybrid only" parking spots, but I am fond of the furniture for the simple reason that you can often take it back apart when you are moving-for a college student this is essential, as space is often at a premium.

Naw. Won't work. The land yachts will simply center on a line and end up comfortably parked across two spaces.

I'm strongly considering this. My most frequent driving task is commuting two-and-a-half hours each day on Houston freeways. Since I can't get hold of one of the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle prototypes, I'm seriously considering a beat-up, 1980 Chevy truck with a reinforced frame and body pannels, loading dock rails around the bed, and a huge cow catcher mounted on the front...

I had never heard of Ikea before, either. We don't have one of those things out here in Wild West Texas. Oh well, I'm kind of glad we don't after having read all these crazy things about them. I guess we will have to stick with Lowes or Home Depot...we do at least have them.
