Medical Advisory Board Process

#1

Post by Thumms »

My topic has to do with the Medical Advisory Board forms and process.

I placed myself in a 90 day treatment program for substance use 9+ years ago and wanted to be 100% honest on my CHL form, so I listed my successful completion of the program. 3 months later I got my MAB notice and a few days after that, I got my forms to have filled out by a doctor.

Since this was a decade ago, I simply used my family doctor whom I've seen regularly for 7 years. He was happy to have me stop in for a brief visit and fill out my forms which he faxed in to the number provided on the medical form, and for back-up he mailed in the originals in the provided envelope.

So now I'm in a holding pattern. The only data on the MAB I can find says that they meet "every other week" to evaluate those in Texas with "drivers restrictions". Nothing is mentioned about how often they meet for CHL medical form approvals. Perhaps it's during the same bi-weekly meeting. I did find one old thread on here about a guy like me who had his forms filled out by a local shrink whom he didn't know beforehand, and he got his approval status about 2 weeks later.

Has anyone else gone down this road? There seems to be very little about it online other than the same old "cut and pastes" of the "rules" and "regulations" but no real stories of hope and/or success.

I took my CHL class the last weekend in May of 2016, had my MAB forms sent in 2 weeks ago, and I'm still in the "under review" status on the info page.

I'm looking forward to getting my final status update. The wheels of progress turn at a mind bogglingly slow pace. But I understand why, and am happy to wait. I just hope I get approved and don't have to jump through any more hoops for something nearly 10 years old and done on my own...

Once I get a result, I'll post it here in case there are others like me out there wondering what does and doesn't happen, and how long things can take.

It takes many months- MAB is the longest drawn out process an application goes through.

I just got an update from the MAB!!!

After calling the MAB a dozen times and never getting an answer, left them a voicemail. Their office number is on a letter in the packet they send you for your doctor to fill out. But they never returned my call, even though the recorded message says they would.

So the next day I emailed them at the address on the MAB website. I gave them my name, DL number, phone number and case number. I also gave them a brief description of wanting to know if my forms were filled out correctly, and asked if they arrived safely.

Well Praise the Lord, this morning I got email confirmation from the MAB office that my case was reviewed yesterday Oct.13th stating that I was deemed "capable" (a.k.a. approved for Concealed Carry) by the MAB. They also said that my approval status was being "sent" to DPS and I should see an update with them soon, perhaps next week sometime. I don't know how modern the offices of the DPS and MAB are, so I don't know if my file gets sent via snail-mail or fax or if they're in the modern age of digital file transfers. But I doubt it. I'm just thankful to see some forward progress, as I near 5 month mark since first sending in my application for my CHL...

I'll post another update once I see any change on DPS's CHL update webpage.

Hopefully I see the much coveted status change from "Under Review" to "Printing in Progress" (or whatever it says) very soon.

So just about two-and-a--half weeks from when you sent it in? That's bureaucratic lightning speed.

Congratulations all around.

Now I just have to wait for DPS to finalize things. Still says pending review...
