Conceal Carry at Collge graduation ceremony?
I plan on attend a Summer graduation ceremony tomorrow at a TTU. The event will be held at the Arena here on campus, from all the laws I have read, I am legally allowed to conceal carry b/c there is no sporting event going on at that time, just a graduation ceremony.

As long as they didn't post it 30.06 while determining their "exclusion zones" you're correct, it's not a sporting event and you're good to carry.

It may be posted anyway, I believe that they listed that as a prohibited area. I could be wrong, but I would check it first. It could be along walk back to your car. I was there for a graduation a year ago in May, and there was no close in parking available.Carolina Cajun wrote:I plan on attend a Summer graduation ceremony tomorrow at a TTU. Yea that's kind of that I figured and they did not to my knowledge include that in the "exclusion zone".TexasTornado wrote:Carolina Cajun wrote:I plan on attend a Summer graduation ceremony tomorrow at a TTU. That will be true unless the university has flat out made the arena off limits. I think from what I've read on a few of these policies that folks have put up here that they have all done just that. I was hoping that I would be able to also do this very thing if OC had passed in 2011 or 2013 because I had several nieces and nephews graduating high school and all of their ceremonies' were at college arenas. However, since the universities have been allowed to decide that some places may still remain off limits it was moot since most all of them placed their arenas off limits sporting event or not.

We all had some pretty quick replies that were all pretty much the same.

A google search for their policy will probably tell you if it's off limits or not.

Well it's not part of the exclusion zone, but I was just hoping not to see a 30.06/30.07 sign at the door when I go there.Jusme wrote:Carolina Cajun wrote:Yea that's kind of that I figured and they did not to my knowledge include that in the "exclusion zone".TexasTornado wrote:Carolina Cajun wrote:I plan on attend a Summer graduation ceremony tomorrow at a TTU. Assuming that the venue was not declared off-limits by the university in question, I'd still probably not carry since it was a high-school-sponsored event.C-dub wrote:That will be true unless the university has flat out made the arena off limits. From what I found ticketed "performance venues" can be granted temporary exclusion if requested. Other events may be granted temporary exclusion with notice 90 days in advance.
I'm feeling it's going to be hit or miss on a graduation.

This was my thought as well. If it's a college graduation and not posted, go for it. If high school, I would leave it in the car.Vol Texan wrote:Assuming that the venue was not declared off-limits by the university in question, I'd still probably not carry since it was a high-school-sponsored event.

If it is a College graduation and not posted, some of us will be able to defend ourselves. None of the highschoolers are going to have that option. For me, that would be even more of a reason to carry.LucasMcCain wrote:This was my thought as well. If it's a college graduation and not posted, go for it. Re: Conceal Carry at Collge graduation ceremony?
That is absolutely a reason we should be allowed to carry. However, under current law it would be illegal to do so if at a school-sponsored event. If I remember correctly, the penalties are also much higher than just carrying past a 30.06 sign (which is also illegal, and I'm not advocating doing so).TexasTornado wrote:If it is a College graduation and not posted, some of us will be able to defend ourselves. I hadn't even thought about it as a "school-sponsored" event only as a "non sporting" event.LucasMcCain wrote:That is absolutely a reason we should be allowed to carry. Here are TTU's 'exclusion zones' off of their HR website area.
http://www.depts.ttu.edu/hr/documents/C ... yZones.pdf
I do not see the arena explicitly listed (it is referenced by 'Any Sporting Event' or 'University Event Where Alcohol is being served" etc
