It all depends on where I am located in relation to perp.
Remember the bank robber that just started shooting for no good reason?

Based upon the limited information provided, I don't think that deadly force is justified. You don't see a weapon right? I have no legal obligation to protect no one but me with my weapon, and then, only when faced with deadly force. I would not draw my weapon unless my life is directly endangered with deadly force. Deadly force will be measured by different factors with each individual and case. There is insufficient information for me to come to a planned conclusion.
Best try to discreetly leave if you can and let this guy do what he is doing. Should you call the police if you get out safely? Sure.

I'll be a good witness unless he tries to take my money. I don't mind shooting someone legally in the back. In fact if they are armed, I prefer it.

The question then arises of, would you use your gun to protect a stranger? Sorry, couldn't resist..
I would use a gun to protect a stranger without a doubt, IF in a situation that I think it is appropriate and necessary.
In this example, a gun is not warranted at this precise time, but that doesn't mean I don't have the means necessary to stop the robbery, if I am close enough and know what is going on.
This whole scenario is to vague to tell exactly what anybody would/could do. But, just because you have a gun, doesn't mean that is all you can use.
I don't see a weapon, so all he's done is make a vebal demand for money with either an expressed or implied verbal threat.
I'm not going to anoint myself as an unpaid bank guard over that.
I'd simply try to unobtrusively put some distance/cover between myself and the bad guy - I'd be prepared to use my sidearm, but so long as the bad guy didn't pull and start waving his own gun around, I wouldn't jump in.
It would seem that most of the posters here are pretty much on the same page . . .

not really enough info. Would be hard for me to shoot an unarmed man (or woman).
I would probably back off given the limited info in that scenario and wait for a better assessment of the situation.
If he had a gun and was waving around, I would certainly wait for a time he wasn't paying attention to me and try to find a bit of cover. If the opportunity arose I would eliminate the immediate threat.
Too many people in this country wait for others to protect them or handle the situation. To roll over and just let him do what he's going to do is tantamount to a breach of my personal duty as a citizen to preserve liberty in this country and bordering on cowardice IMO. I'm not a LEO but I am a citizen and I will not abide a direct threat to myself or my fellow citizens.
