TSA Incident (or non-incident). What would you do?

I travel 2-4 round trip flights per month.
THIS has been a fear of mine, so I have made it a policy that I never use the same luggage, backpacks or other, for gun stuff as I do for travelling

Same here. I always knew it would be a good idea, but then I had an incident with live ammo in my bag so I actually implemented it!

I would have tossed the magazine in the trash. A <=$40 sacrifice is better than chancing arrest.

The cost isn't the issue. Having the terminal evacuated & shut down if the magazine and/or bullets are found is. Or the extreme hassle that would follow if someone were to see you toss the magazine into the trash.

What exactly was their problem with it? (my first guess would be because combined with a pair of tube socks, you could make a dandy ad hoc sap, but that would be too logical and intelligent for the TSA, so that probably isn't it...)

You could do the same thing with one of the dinner rolls they serve these days.

Should have laid the magazine in a seat next to you (with no one looking) then jumped from your seat, pointed at it, the cried out "Oh my gosh...a CLIP!" Then taken off running and screaming frantically as though in fear for your life.
This way you'd have been the victim. You would have gotten counseling...heck, they may have offered you a settlement for the emotional trauma.

One of my pet peeves with TSA.

Good officer response: "You didn't do anything wrong, it's just we can't see through this much change so we have to check your bag. In the future if you leave your change at home or carry it in a separate bag it will get you through faster."

Bad officer response: "You need to leave this at home" **Usually said with a scowl and condescending attitude.

When I was a boy ( probably 9 yrs old ) my dad picked me up at DFW after returning from visiting my Aunt in Massachusetts. I had brought back a couple items I was gifted in my checked baggage. Well at the time, they didn't have bathrooms outside of security at the baggage claim area, so while I was in the car or something (probably with my mom), he took my suitcase back through security to use the facilities before we embarked on our 1+ hour drive home (this was back when you didn't need a ticket to get through security. It took him some time to actually come back... They had no problem with pocket knife, but they definitely took him elsewhere and read him the riot act over the plastic snub-nose cap gun in my bags! Needless to say he wasn't too pleased when he finally returned to the car....

Another possibility is to simply empty the magazines and dump the ammo in some trash. All you have then are empty magazines which shouldn't be seen as dangerous. Not sure how easy it would be to empty them and throw away the ammo without someone seeing you. Mail the mags to yourself before flying back.

I guess it really depends on how much time you have.

I believe TSA considers magazines to be "firearm components", which they technically are, so you're not really supposed to get through screening with them.

OK, I feel stupid. Packing for a flight tomorrow and found my tactical knife and pen in my shaving kit. Glad I never filed a claim with TSA.

The best option in most cases is to drive. I've flown only once since 9/11. I know not everyone can do that, but think about it if you can. If enough people do that, the situation may improve.

I was told just declare it so they can take it of bag so x-ray can see through bag.

Went thru TSA checkpoint with about $8.00 in change without a problem. But this time I didn't leave coin purse in my back pack. Instead, I carried it in my pocket until going thru scanner and put it in the bucket. After it went thru xray machine, I then put it in my backpack.
