Question on LTC application

#1

Post by eagle6845 »

Greetings,

I recently got my CHL certification and I moved on to the process of applying online. During class I remember that the instructor said I would have to pay $140 (i don't qualify for discounts) and a fee for using the service which I'm pretty sure sounded something like under $10.

Now on the last page of the application, it lists the fees that I'm about to get charged with and in addition to the CHL fee it shows a "Texas.gov Price" of $145.20! (see image).

Is this an error on the way they are displaying it or is that actually an extra fee for that much just to use the site? The reason I say this is because I clicked on the "what is the fee" link, and it went to a missing page, and I had to do some digging around on my own which leads me to believe they have updated their websites and systems... anyway this is what the explanation of the fee listed on texas.gov It seems absurd to pay $140+ just to use an automated service online... to submit a form in addition to chl fees.
What is the ‘Texas.gov price’?

The price of the Texas.gov online services includes funds that support the ongoing operations and enhancements of Texas.gov.

It looks like it means it costs an additional $5.20 to pay through the Web site

It is the "somewhat under $10" you mentioned. $5.20 processing fee added to your regular $140.

I think it was an extra $2.50 when I did mine 3 years ago. Looks like it has doubled+ since then. Vehicle registration for using online keeps going up too. :mad5

I've had several students get confused over that. It should be easy for DPS to correct that.
It should say:
DPS fee $140.00
Svc Chg 5.20
Total $145.20

to eliminate any confusion.

Thank you for the replies. Yes that was my thought as well... that the fee for the texas.gov was 5.20 and the price displayed there is the total charged. I will go and complete the application and report back if this is indeed the case. If so, whoever they hired to program their shopping cart system should get fired! that is a colossal mistake

It looks like there is a link, "What is Texas.gov price," that should give you the information.

Right! Missed that. I gues it's a roundabout way of saying it's a "convenience fee." :tiphat:

UPDATE: I went ahead and completed the application. As some pointed out earlier it turns out the way they list the fees is misleading and erroneous. I only ended up paying $145.20, so the "texas.gov price" is $5.20 and the value that currently shows next to it is actually the TOTAL to be paid.

Anyway, thank you for all your help everyone. Hopefully this thread will be helpful to others in the future. :txflag:

The other fee ($10) they referred to may be the fee for your fingerprints. Make sure you get those done if you have not already.
