I viewed a webinar yesterday led by the legal department of the Texas Association of School Boards. It was attended by large urban and small rural school district participants. The presentation was informative and covered the relevant codes for reference. One point that the presenter made on OC struck me. The presenter said that open carry are not the people who pose a threat to schools. It is the stranger or person acting in a strange manner that might be concealed armed or disturbed that schools should, and do, strive to identify each day around student drop-off and pick-up times.

One point I had not considered and that my CHL instructor did not mention. While it may be legal to carry a gun locked in my vehicle with my CHL, most school districts have policies that don't allow weapons on campus at any time. GKA (LOCAL) and DH (LOCAL) are both places school employees should check along with the employee handbook. You don't want to be reprimanded or worse if the drug dog alerts on your personal vehicle at school.

Maybe some schools, but definately not all, have such rules about weapons in vehicles on campus - I am assuming you are meaning for employees. Also after an experience I had about 2 years ago with a drug dog at school, I wouldn't worry much about a drug dog hitting on your vehicle because of a gun. I happened to be in hall when drug dog was checking lockers and he passed within 2 or 3 ft. of me as he changed sides of hall and never even hesitated (I had my 9mm Shield on my person).

I'm sticking with my statement that most schools have these two policies, because both policies have Legal you would also have a local policy that spells out how your specific community views the Legal policy. Sure would hate to see a forum member have a potential problem for having a weapon on school property, while at work. I've had dogs alert on shotgun shells in vehicles during Dove season.
