HPB Response To My Email

The signs on HPB will be resolved on their own in the next few years. It won't be because a handful of LTC holders quit shopping there, but due to the fact they have failed to adapt their business model to today's customer.

Some years ago I patronized HPB any time I was visiting in a large Texas city where a HPB store was readily available - and walked out with a lot of books. Haven't been traveling as much and just adding to my brimming library with books at half price didn't seem very important. With the tremendous change in technology, I've been wondering how they have been staying in business or will do so in the future.

Thought about sending an email to the HPB address but decided not to - a waste of time.

I, too, received the canned response letter from HPB. I simply responded that it has never posted the 30.06 sign in the past so there were indeed many licensed customers coming and going armed and had not done anything there except spend their money. I thanked them for being a nice place to shop (and I respected their right to post the signs), but that I sadly would not be back.

I got a slight variation to their form letter. At least they acknowledge that they are sending these to the executives now. Maybe a continued stream of polite, reasonable emails could make a difference. In my opinion, showing understanding for 30.07 signs asking for removal of 30.06 is the best approach.

I suspect that I, too, will receive a form letter response, but still feel compelled to write about this issue.

I was disheartened to see Half Price Books decide to post the 30.06 signs preventing concealed carry of firearms used by licensed, law abiding citizens for self defense of themselves and others. This decision counterintuitively makes stores less safe, not more safe. This is not the same as open carry, which could be alarming to other patrons. Concealed carry is a matter of Constitutional rights, of privacy, and of human dignity.

I know that one common response to emails regarding this issue mention that HPB wants to be weapons-free. Does this mean that they ask uniformed law enforcement officers to leave the store? Do you know that off duty and retired law enforcement officers do not have to obey the 30.06 signage (even though, as a demographic, they commit crimes at a higher rate than Texas concealed handgun licensees). Most importantly, criminals intent on breaking the law do not adhere to such signs. They are in your stores already, and now your staff and law-abiding patrons are defenseless against their attacks in the store or in the parking lots as they return to their cars. Do you intend to put metal detectors at each store to ensure that illegal weapons are kept out and not just the legal ones?

I regret that I will be unable to give Half Price Books any further business as long as the 30.06 signs are posted. As homeschoolers, we buy a lot of books for our five children at HPB. We run one homeschool co-op and are a part of two other major ones and will ask the members in these groups to join us in finding a bookstore that supports our freedoms and our rights to self defense.

Thank you for your email. Half Price Books has had a long-standing policy making all of our stores and facilities weapons-free. This policy will not change in 2016, though we are now posting signs in our Texas stores that are compliant with the relative statutes starting on January 1st.

We know this is a sensitive issue and understand that there are many different viewpoints on the subject. However, it is the policy from our corporate offices, to our warehouses, and to our stores that weapons are not allowed on the premises. We decided to do this for the comfort of our employees and customers.

One follow up - Texas 30.06 (concealed carry) has been in effect since 1997. It is not new as of January 1, only 30.07 (open carry) is.

HPB has thrived for nearly 20 years in Texas without posting 30.06 signs.

I hope the 30.06 signs are removed soon as I look forward to an opportunity to once again patron your stores.
