But here's my new BUG -- a Bond Arms Snake Slayer IV, with an extended grip and 4.25" barrel, 45Colt and .410. And Bond had a special for purchases in August to get an additional barrel for 50% off, so will likely get a 3" with that.
Nice! How is the recoil?

I've not yet shot it (have to find a place for shotgun) but watched some videos and it seemed very manageable with the short grip, and is supposed to be even better with the extended. It is of course a single shot (well, one round 45 Colt and one of .410 - I picked up some Hornady Triple Defense .410) so there is a certain amount of not caring as much about recoil and needing to take the next shot. Someone else here also has a Bond Arms but I'll leave it to him to say whether he's shot his or not.

Below is a direct link to the ATF Permanent Brady Permit Chart. It lists, by state, what documents qualify for an exemption to the NICS check when purchasing a firearm.

You will note that for Texas it says, "Concealed weapons permits qualify."

I bought a shotgun recently at a box retailer and the chl didn't save me much time - still did the transfer and all, just no NICS check as discussed here. Might have saved me 10 muminutes total - the big thing for me is that there will be no random hold or delay for whatever reason on the NICS because I'm fully licensed. I've heard of the NICS system responding with a delay just 'cuz' before, although I do not know the level of truth in that...

There are definitely times the NICS kicks back a 'random' delay through the computer system ( supposedly happens more in the late evening ). Happened to me on one transfer. FFL ran it again 5 min later, came back OK second time.

I got one straight thru check out at academy, one delay at a lgs, followed by a denial at another lgs a few months later. Took them three months to get me cleared thru NICS. That's when I decided to get my CHL. Have not made a purchase since my CHL but have it none the less.

I supervise the Firearms department at a large chain store.

1: The 4473 form must be filled out completely and accurately. It is a Federal requirement for all guns purchased through an FFL.

2: With a valid Texas CHL the NICS background check can be skipped. Otherwise the NICS background check must be performed and the seller must get a "Proceed" to sell the firearm. Since it is done on computer at our company it takes longer to type the info in than it does to get a response most days.

3: The buyer pays for the firearm.

4: Paperwork must be completed to officially transfer the firearm to the buyer.

5: Due to the necessity of having accurate paperwork ( the Feds are about as "retentive" as it gets when they audit an FFL) we also have a requirement for a manager's approval on all paperwork before the firearm is released.

If we're not busy, which is rare, it can be done in about 15-20 minutes. Having a CHL cuts about 5 minutes or so off of the total time.

Disclaimer: Total time does not include ohh-ing and aww-ing over every firearm in the department, handling 3 or 4 before selecting one (or handling 3 or 4 just for fun), swapping stories with the sales associate and/or your buddy that came along, or anything else you wish to do to spend as much time as possible in a gun shop like we all do.

That was pretty much my experience when I bought my PX4 at Cabela's last year. All the paperwork took about 25-30 minutes, with a CHL.

My brother (no CHL) had to wait two days for the NCIS check a couple years ago when he was buying (at Academy, I think).

Location and or store make no difference. The checks are all in the hands of the NICS system. We had one day where all we got were "Delays."
CHLs were in and out with their purchases.
