Not "new" to shooting (been doing that for over 35 yrs.), but new to the forum.

I am looking for a good Rifle/Pistol range near the Magnolia/Conroe area.
My Brother and his wife recently moved to Magnolia from Austin and are looking for a good place to shoot.

His wife is interested in obtaining her CHL, so....the name of a good instructor would be helpful. She has shot some before, but I think she would benefit from some additional instruction prior to her taking the CHL course. If there is a "ladies" course available somewhere, that would be ideal.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

There are a few in the area. Thunder Gun Range, Gun Emporium, and Shooter's Station would fill most any shooting needs very well. Thunder, and Emporium are both outdoor ranges with pistol, rifle, and shotgun ranges. If they are will to go a touch further south Carter's Country in Spring is very similar to the ones previously mentioned. Thunder also supports IDPA.

Shooters Station in Conroe is an indoor range. Pistol or pistol caliber carbines and 25 yard maximum. They feature a pistol league that is just forming. They shoot on Wednesday nights.

All feature CHL classes although I cannot attest to thier quality as I have taken a class at either.

If they are will to drive even further south of Houston PSC is an excellent members only range, and probably one of the best ranges in the area. they offer almost any shooting discipline, comptition, and instruction.

Hopefully a couple of our members will chime in with more information about Thunder Gun Range and several ladies classes that are offered locally. I understand that they are very good. I plan on getting my wife into one some time after our baby is born.

My wife and I shoot at Thunder on a regular basis. It is a good range with rifle, shotgun and pistol bays. There is also a very active International Defensive Pistol group there.

Regarding handgun training by ladies for ladies, you won't find a better instructor for women than my wife. She is an NRA certified pistol instructor, active in the Montgomery College 2nd Amendment Academy, and helped set up the PSC ladies program. You can either PM me or her (compvest on this forum) with your contact information and she will contact your wife to understand what kind of training she would like.

I took my CHL and my renewal class at Shooters Station in Conroe. The instructor there is great. She makes what could be and often is a very dull class and makes it interesting. She great on the range as well. She shows great patience!

I don't think you could do any better.

I took my CHL at Hotwells shooting range in Cypress http://www.cdshoot.com. They have a really good instructor, Donovan, he also teaches some tactical classes which are really cool.

My youngest daughter took her CHL at Hotwells a few months back.

I took my CHL class at LionStar in Huntsville back in Aug. I've been to Shooter's Station and they're nice people.

My wife is going Saturday to Lionstar to take her course for CHL. Is there anything we need to know or be prepared for before she goes? Is there more than one instructor? I understood that they don't do fingerprints or photos there. Do you get the fingerprints after you take the course? How hard is the written test? No problem with the shooting test. She surprised me at how good she shoots.

She needs to be prepared for a long day. At a minimum, bring photo ID, a pistol in .32 caliber or larger that she can handle safely, 50 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection.

I don't know how many instructors they will have.

If they don't do the photos and fingerprints, they should recommend people who do them.

The written test isn't hard. There's one trick question.

When I took the CHL course there they had 1 instructor for the class/written test and the owner ran you through the timed course of fire.

Bring your own weapon,50rounds of ammo and eye/ear protection...but if you dont have or dont bring eye/ear protection they will provide it for her no problem.

They dont do finger prints.You have to go to the local Sheriff's Dept to get that done.As for the pics, I had mine done at walgreens b/c they do passport photos pretty cheap..like $5 I think.

The hardest part of the class is staying awake or sitting still for so long,but they do take breaks every so often to stretch your legs and such.If you read the material carefully and pay attention the test is easy.Plus they go over a review of the test verbatim orally before you take it so you pretty much know what to do.
