New guy in TX

Hello all,

New guy to the forum. Am currently practicing and studying for my CHL.

Wanted to get the opinions and experiences of those who have had a CHL for awhile. I have a Sig P229R that i plan on using for my carry pistol. I've also got a good sturdy belt. That's it so far. My main problem is that i'm a big guy(6'2, 300lbs). I'm not liking the idea of a hip carry. I'm considering a back carry. My problem is i'm just not experienced at all.

I wanted to get ideas on holsters, pistols, etc... for bigger men.

Welcome to the forum basslee, I am sure you will get many suggestions here shortly.

Glad you joined us, and we look forward to your participation here.

Flint.

P.S. concerning your sig. line: "Theives get rich, Saints get shot and God don't answer prayers alot."

No, IS an answer. ;-)

I am 6'3" and about 340 I carry a HK USP 45 in a Don Hume IWB at about 4 o'clock. I thought about small of the back carry, but did not think that I would be able to sit alot with it on. I also have used a paddle holster with my HK, and it worked great. I like the IWB better.
I have not been carring under my CHL for long, but this is what I have used.

Welcome, Basslee!

My best suggestion for you is - go to Cabela's in Fort Worth. Go on a Sunday afternoon if you can. Look for Marty. (He is the forever tall guy hanging out in the hunting, reloading area.)

Have an open mind, and be prepared to spend some time talking and shopping.

If you can make it to Houston in September, this forum has a day scheduled at PSC in Friendswood (south of Houston).
Many forum members attend. You'll learn a lot.

Welcome to the forum!! I typically carry at about 3:30/4:00 IWB. The OWB holsters stick out too far for summer carry but are easily covered with a light jacket when it gets cold or another cover shirt if you can wear one in the summer. I've been wearing a light short sleeve button down with a at-shirt lately when I carry a full size and just a t-shirt when I carry the sub compact. My biggest obstacle was that I was too concerned with printing in the beginning and would constantly tug at my shirt and look to see if it was sticking out. Truth is, most people aren't looking for a gun. It's never on people's minds. If you go out and watch people's gaze........you'll feel a bit more at ease with carrying which will help you in the long run.

Basslee, I am of similar build and don't care for hip holsters either..
It's too damn hot in Texas in June-August to wear jacket anyway!

my preference is for the Galco Half Holster shoulder rig.. you can wear a loose fitting shirt and nobody is any the wiser unless they hug you. I have never been 'made' with this set up.

What does SOB mean?

OWB is outside waistband right?

That's one thing it means. The other thing is what you'll utter when you sit down in a hard-backed chair while wearing an SOB holster.

Shortness of Breath.
CHF (congestive hear failure) patients get this all the time, as well as COPD (congestive, obstructive pulmonary disease).
asthma (no acronym) can also be a cause of this symptom.

and good'en Kev!
