Texas Marine Needs Help with getting CHL (firearms course)
I am a Active Duty Marine stationed in South Carolina, I am a proud Texas Native (born and raised). I've apply for a SC permit, but I am trying to get a Texas permit (I know the two states honor each others permit, but with a Texas permit your license is honor by I think 9 more states). But my only challenge is the firearms training class, I've read the Texas Codes about requirement to apply for a permit, I like I am stationed in S. Carolina and don’t plan on going back home to Texas for a while now. Does anyone know how I can get around taking the firearms course to get my license ( I know that because I am active duty Idon’tt have to take the range portion of the class). Let me clarify I am not trying to get out of taking the course, but I am looking for a way to get it done from here in South Carolina

TexasGhost,
I appreciate your service in the Marines, Thank You!
Unfortunately, you will have to come back to Texas to take the class and as far as being exempt from the shooting test, you would have to send in a current record of qualification with a handgun. I had a young lady in my last class who was in the National Guard and she had qualified with the M249 and M16, but no a handgun qual. She had to come back and take the shooting class. If you don't have any written documentation of your qual with a handgun, then I would suggest that you just go ahead and take the shooting test. It's so easy there really isn't any reason not to.
If there is any way you could come to the Houston area I would be willing to help you through the process. It may be that the previous poster gave you some good adivice about just getting a permit from Utah. I don't have any experience with Utah, but I hear it's not that difficult.
*Also realize that some states will not recogize your Utah permit if you are not a resident of Utah. If you got a Utah permit, it would be considered a "Non-Resident" permit since you don't live in Utah. For many states it wouldn't be a problem, but some won't recognize your Utah permit if you don't live there.
I'll give you some free adivise my friend, Never, ever travel through a state where you haven't made a concerted effort to research their firearm laws. It can be a lot of work, but can really pay off in keeping you out of trouble OR giving your lawyer more to work with if you are cited for something.
God Bless,

I think you can get a non-resident Utah license and be covered in almost all the same states that our fair one honors. It doesn't require any class time, IIRC. Just some money and a bg-check.
Is this for real?
Tell me more. How does one go about applying for this? Would it cover me if I decide to "carry" in Texas? So many questions.......
Oh, yes, to the Marine that started this thread........Semper Fi! and Thanks for your service!

I wonder if Linda can simply conference him in on the phone or Skype or something and share out the presentations. She has the equipment to do it I am sure. I wonder if the statutes dictate that you must attend IN PERSON and not telephonically. I did not find anythign like that, but let's wait for TXI.

OK, I guess I have ignored this thread long enough. Here is the straight skinny on Utah:
1. YES, there IS a class requirement to get an initial Utah permit. (Otherwise, why would there be Utah instructors? ) There is NO class requirement to renew the permit.
2. YES, you DO have to take the class in person. No web training, phone conferencing, mental telepathy, or Vulcan mind melding allowed.
3. NO, there is NOT a shooting proficiency test requirement.
4. The Utah class can be taught anywhere, even outside the United States.
5. The Texas CHL class can only be taught inside the great state of Texas, and the shooting proficiency test can only be taken at a DPS approved range.
I think that about covers it. Any other questions?
