Hey all , I am curious , does anyone else use any of the Maxpedition CCW packs and , what do You think of them ? I havent gotten My license just yet but , I have the Maxpedition Jumbo pack that I have been keeping my XD in while out and about in My vehicle . Its really pretty handy , I can carry a lot of , probably unnecessary gear , in . I do definatley see the problem with off body carry though . I do have on order a Bladetech IWB Holster for My XD , I figure that will be My Everyday carry method . Anyway , I just wanted to see what Everyone else is doing and what You think .

I think the bags are overpriced but the quality is decent on the ones I handled. You're right to be concerned about the off-body issues, although the risks vary depending on your environment. One approach is to carry the gun IWB and use the bag for pens, pencils, flashlights, cellphone(s), tablet, cash-wallet, work keys, etc. If your gun and ID wallet are on you, loss or theft of the bag is only money.

This is smarter than off body carry.

Thats really what I was thinking . Besides , It does take some extra time trying to unzip a zipper then draw . In fact , it takes quite a bit more .

I bought a Maxpedition Jumbo a few years ago with thoughts that I would carry in that bag. Then as I began carrying the bag around (previous to going for my CHL) I realized that there were times when I couldn't carry the bag and times when I didn't want to. The thought of leaving a bag somewhere with a firearm in it scares the brown out of me. I just had a litany of "what-ifs" that rolled through my head and I made the decision that I would not be able to "off-body" carry. I love Maxpedition gear and still carry one of there bags as my "man-purse", but for CCW I wouldn't recommend it.

Also, if you have your CHL and you off body carry, you are responsible to carry that bag or have the bag in your possession at all times.

It's not a purse. . It's an urban shoulder pack! ;-)

Yeah, I have the Maxpedition pack. I don't carry everywhere I go, mostly just to and from work. I keep a couple of knives, a flashlight, pen and paper, some chewing gum, my tablet, and a snubby(spare gun) and extra ammunition in it.

As for a primary carry gun,...holster it on your body.

Law or personal opinion?

Not quite true that you have to have the bag on your body or have it in your possession, but the gun must be secured from children. This doesn't apply only to CHLs.

TEX PE. CODE ANN. § 46.13 : Texas Statutes - Section 46.13: MAKING A FIREARM ACCESSIBLE TO A CHILD

“IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE, TRANSPORT, OR ABANDON AN UNSECURED FIREARM IN A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN ARE LIKELY TO BE AND CAN OBTAIN ACCESS TO THE FIREARM.”

I agree there's a difference between the leaving the bag on a school playground and leaving it in your office. Or in your locked car.

Like the "shoot me" vests that were popular a few years ago but now I hardly see except at matches.

I was thinking that as well . I am just gonna carry my other crap in the bag and just carry on me . I really feel safer that way and , that leaves out the chance of me forgetting the bag or , someone taking my bag with my pistol in it . The bags are pretty cool though but , like I said , I can sure cram a lot of probably , unnecessary gear in it but , I rarely forget anything

I think there is a current group think that likes to say fanny packs and carriers like the Maxpedition stuff are strange/weird/fem, whatever. I also heard that it screams "gun". Well, maybe to another person who carries that way. I used to carry my XDm in a 5.11 fanny pack, before my CHL came in the mail. I carried it from the house to the car that way, simply to not alarm the neighbors. I think the person who prepares get the last laugh.

I think those Maxpedition packs can play a crucial role as an EDC supplies holder. Weather gear, first-aid, maps, batteries, flashlight, knife, paracord...and on an on. There are TNTC videos on YouTube with people showing what they pack in theirs. It may not be something that you carry around with you all of the time, but something you can throw into your car and have it be there if it hits the fan. It is also a nice place to store a BUG and a little extra ammo.
