Second ID form

#1

Post by samobius »

How many of you have used your CHL ID as a secondary ID form when, say, opening a new bank account?

Since I'm an American citizen born abroad, I get asked more and more for my proof of citizenship whenever I do ANYTHING. It's gotten to the point where, when I know I'm going to need to prove identity AND citizenship, I just show my passport instead of my driver's license. I've actually contemplated getting a passport card for this reason.

But, a CHL is only granted to US citizens anyway, right? So it proves citizenship by itself, theoretically.

No. A permanent resident immigrant can get a Texas CHL.

I wouldn't expect one person in 20 to know what a CHL is, anyway.

I use my passport when required to prove my citizenship.

This has been discussed several times on the forum, but can't get my search-fu to work. LOL

Most people won't use it. I personally have though, but only at a location where I knew the person would have no issue with the CHL. :thumbs2:

Also, non-citizens can get their CHL, so it would not prove citizenship.

Ok, I'll grant you the times are far and few, and tenuous at best, but there have been 3 or 4 times in the last couple of years.

1) CHL being one
2) getting my SS card replaced was another
3) contracting for a government contractor

There's been one or two other occasions where just having a passport made the process so much quicker and painless, but I can't remember what they are.

I did not realize that immigrants could get a CHL. I guess I'll stick to passports.

I guess it would depend on the person.

My wife lost her drivers license and got carded at a bar. She showed them her passport.
They refused to serve her because it wasnt a drivers license?!?!?!

I wonder if someone can get into any trouble for not accepting a passport as I.D.?

Entering into the US (legally) from another country.
To work in the US (legally) you're supposed to show proof of identity and eligibility to work. US citizenship proves eligibility to work.
Purchasing from the CMP.

Another advantage of the passport and passport card is no home address printed on the front.

Bars can refuse service to anyone. So...not in this case.

AB,

They may have been doing her a favor.

Would you really want to spend time and money in an establishment with employees that stupid?

Same with a voter's registration card .... use your TDL and the voter registration card, if you don't have one, get one, they are FREE.

Due to the situation at the last gun show where the illegal alien, possibly working with/for the government, had been issued a TDL, I advise people to carry their voter registration card to prove citizenship/not a convicted felon; along with a TDL for proof of age, especially if they do not have a CHL and want to buy a gun..... In other situations it's a good second ID, without showing your CHL.

I generally just use a credit card as second form of ID. I never show my CHL unless required to.
