Need a little help here.

#1

Post by Samurai Blur »

Hi all. I'm new here. I live in the Texarkana area, really far east. In recent years our crime rate has gone up due to all the Catrina refugees flooding in. I have 2 friends that have been killed by people carrying guns (without a license). On in his home and the other in a public park. After giving it some thought I have decided to get a CHL to protect myself and my girlfriend of 2 years who is with me all the time. I would just like to know, how difficult is the range test? I have only shot about 100 rounds with a Glock 19 and my accuracy is pretty decent at about 10 yards. I shoot at wine bottles at a friend's house and hit about 85% of the time. Do you think I could pass the range test or is it pretty difficult to do? How does it work? Is it a "just don't miss" test, or is there a required score? That's really the only part I'm worried about. Input is greatly appreciated

Welcome, it's a great board.
Sorry about your friends.

To answer the question, NOT AT ALL!. Hope that's clear enough.
If your 85% shooting is after you've "emptied" the wine bottles, just leave that step off on test day and you should pull 100%.
You have to shoot varying amounts of rounds at 3, 7, & 9? yards.
The only kicker to someone relatively new to shooting is there are multi-shot, timed rounds were you'll have for example 15 seconds to shoot 5 rounds at X distance. What happens when the instructor says "fire", many people get caught up in the sudden rush of gun fire and pull off 5 rounds rapidly which they can't do accurately. To quote of a friend, "Use all the time you need, don't waste any". Three seconds per round is alot of time.

If you don't already know this, if you qualify with a revolver, you will NOT be licensed to carry a pistol. Qualify with a pistol and you can carry either, or both if your belt/ankle is strong enough. To quote another, close personal friend, Just Do It. You'll be fine.

May as well have your girlfriend take it at the same time, that way ya'll can be each others backup. I take tactical handgun training. If your taught be truely knowledgable people, that can be a huge asset.

Good luck

All the above is correct. I will add that minimum score is 175. Listen, do what you are instructed to do, & you will pass.
I will give this example to show how difficult the test is. Last month there was a widow lady at the instructor class that I use & had not shot any gun since she was 12. Probably close to 50 yrs. She took some instruction at the class & went to the line w/ someone to load a borrowed gun for her & she passed. Someone else loaded for her so I dont know her score.
Last week I was there again & 2 ladies besides the one I had instructed. One never shot a hand gun & would qualify w/ a borrowed one. The other had shot her gun only once. Both took some instruction before going to the line. I loaded for one & the instructor loaded for the other. As we left the 7yd line going to the 15, I told the lady I was loading for, "I can look at your target & you are qualified rigth now. Relax & have some fun." She grinned & said OK, thanks.
As we turned around at the 15yd line I heard the instructor tell his lady that she was qualified already too.
The lady I instructed carries a revolver but borrows my wife's Baretta Storm so she can carry what she wants. She shot 243 out of 250 w/ a borrowed gun.
You will do fine. Relax & have some fun.

Welcome to the forum Samurai ,
I am also in Texarkana and we have some good instructors here. Pm me and I can give you the name of one that teaches out Hwy 59 toward the lake. He has you come out before the class and shoot 50 times and will help you if needed. Then the Saturday of the class you will be ask to shot 50 more times for the class/grading part.

In my class, we had one woman who was actually scared of guns, but she was taking the class because her brother was "making her".

She had never shot a gun before in her life. She passed the range test, and actually scored better than another woman who was RENEWING her CHL.

Listen to your instructor and you will pass.

Yeah, I know who you're talking about. I have a friend that owns property near him and during the hunting season earlier in the year I could hear the people shooting at his range all weekend long. Fortunately for me though, a friend of mine gave me the number to the person he took his test from. She lives in New Boston. She does the whole course in one day (all 10 hours) and only charges $85 for it. I really appreciate everyone's replies. I feel much more confident about taking the test now. Thanks.

Agreed. Listen exactly to what the instructor says, paying special attention to: 1) when to shoot and not/ie when to begin; 2) the number of rounds being fired in a particular sequence. If possible, line up close to the instructor (even feign poor hearing if needed). That will prove very helpful.

Also don't sass the instructor. If you glitch an shoot one too many or something, apologize, take a deep breath and continue the test.

You will do fine.

Welcome aboard, you have a nice part of the world up there. The test is easy, it's the waiting for the licence that stings.

The shooting test is so easy a caveman could do it.
