Drivers license different address

#1

Post by lorax81 »

Im going this weekend to take the CHL class and im just wondering if I have a previous address on my drivers license if it is going to be a problem when I put my real address for the CHL?
Will they cross reference the address and deny if they don't match up? should I just go ahead and contact the DPS office to get the address changed on my DL?

Thanks

I recommend getting your driver license corrected today. You can do it online.

You'll have problems if you don't.

After 4 years of college and 3 address changes, I still have my dad's address on my license. Aside from the 141 day wait, my plastic arrived a few days ago without a hitch. :thumbs2:

A license holder is required to change their driver's license address within 30 days from the date a change takes affect (section 521.054), same as the CHL. So if the CHL doesn't match the DL, an officer could cite you for an invalid CHL or DL, after all one of them will have an incorrect address.

The consequences of having an incorrect address on a driver license are trivial. It's a class C misdemeanor, and the judge will almost always dismiss the charge if you get an updated license by the date of the hearing (TC § 521.054).

Having the wrong address on your CHL is not a criminal offense at all, but your CHL can be suspended if you fail to correct the address within 30 days of moving (§ 411.187). However, DPS has to find out that you moved. The only way I can see that the would find out relative to a traffic stop is that the officer swears out an affidavit and sends it to DPS.

The police around here seem pretty lenient about this stuff. I know people who lived here for years driving on an out-of-state license with out-of-state plates on their car. Then they got a warning because the registration expired.

(In the little town where I lived in Illinois, the police kept track of people who moved and gave them a couple of tickets on day 31. But they didn't have much crime to deal with.)

Anyway, it's best to keep all this stuff in order. You'll have to do it the right way sooner or later.

Problem is a lot of women (my gf for one) like to have an old address or a PO box on their license for safety reasons. Stalker sees a hot girl drive by, gets the plate and can have her home address in about 2 minutes from plate and from there get name and address as well. Not saying it is right or wrong, just a fact.

In this situation, I might suggest she get a state ID (not a drivers license - I had one when I traveled a lot in case I lost my DL) and use that when applying for CHL. It can have the address matching the CHL.

Would that help the situation?

You can't get both a state ID and a driver license. You used to be able to, but they made it illegal some years ago.

You also can't have driver licenses from different states.

I suppose the "legal" answer to women disconnecting their home address from their license plates (which is the problem described above) is to use a P.O. Box. You can get them pretty cheap at Mailboxes R Us type of place.

Using your aged parents' home address probably isn't a good idea.

My "aged" parents have firearms and live in the country. Woe to anyone approaching the house.
I was told by DPS that you aerent allowed to use PO boxes anymore.

I think it's past due for the Katrina evacuees to get Texas license plates or move back home.
