Another El Pasoan here. If you like boring weather you'll love it here - no hurricanes, no earthquakes, we get snow maybe once every 2-3 years (and it's a record snowfall if it lasts more than 2-3 days before complete melt-off.) Our only weather issue is the spring winds, which can go from a balmy 10-15 mph to over 40-50 mph in March/April. Lots of sunshine.

We have several good gunshops here, and some good CHL instructors as well.

And TWO locations for Rudy's BBQ!
TSRA / NRA
KA5RLA
All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me

Another El Pasoan here. Great place to live - quite friendly imo. Despite what some folks might say about the border violence, we are a very safe city (ironic that we live across from one of the most dangerous cities in the world!). As it has been mentioned before, we've got a HUGE military presence here so most folks are very caring twoards our guys and gals in uniform.

One criticism? Our gun shops are pretty horrible. Bad selection and way overpriced. Unfortuantely our gun shows aren't that much better (if they were, i'd probably own more guns in and be In bigger debt! ;-) ). Transfer to an ffl or academy is probably the best way to get a reasonably priced gun here.

Oh and don't let folks scare you away from the northeast side of town. Its a great place to live! Hope you end up making it here, always good to have another gun loving texan. :patriot:

Welcome to El Paso, soon anyways. El PAso ain't that bad of a city,if you know where to go and not go anyways. As for fort bliss we just ended up renovating our px and we now sell everything from buffalo wild wings to guns and ammo. Its kinda nice actually.
As for post policy on weapons...they are actually pretty lenient. I'm our most experienced armorer in my unit so I kinda have to know these things. All you have to do is get the proper form from either the Robert E. Lee gate or the provost marshall fill it out within 72 hours (even though some ppl don't) along with getting your company commander to sign it, bring it back and you are good to go. Yes, even if you live off post, but I know several people that do live off post that don't do this and no one has tried anything against them because of it.
Now on to your chl. Ft Bliss' Rod and Gun CLub offers a class there every 3rd sat of every month run by a an old retired cop/fed by the name of Butch Sears. (He is a phenomenal instructor. He's been there, done that and taught the guys and gals how to come back while up at Quantico) The cost per person is $110 but to submit the CHL it costs active duty military nothing at all. Here is the website for the Rod and Gun Club so you can give it a once over http://www.blissmwr.com/rodandgun/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Like I said, welcome to El Paso
Btw which unit you heading to?

Another El Pasoan here! I'd recommend El Paso Shooters Academy for the CHL class.
I like it here in El Paso. The food is excellent! People are friendly and unlike CA, you don't have to leave your place to go to work 2 or hours before you need to be there.

I have lived in El Paso my whole and describe it as one of the biggest small towns around. It's small enough that the people in general are friendly and helpful and big enough to have most modern comforts and venues but not so large that we have the crime of the bigger cities. Ft.bliss and the soldiers has alway been very welcome in the community and there has always been a sense of pride in the base. In fact it's one of the biggest players in stimulating the local economy. Most places you go it is not uncommon to see soldiers doing thier business among the people. Most businesses also offer some sort of military discount. I have had my chl for over a year now and have never had a problem carrying and found that it is very easy to go around town while running errands as most places do not have the correct signage . Alot of places do have no weapons allowed or gunbuster signs but nothing the can legally ban you from the premesis. All they can do is ask you to please leave if they find out your carrying. It's in my opinion that people here rather just turn a blind eye to chl laws and act like it doesn't really exist so it's best not to talk about it in mixed company and draw attention to your self.
