Re: I'm Proud of my Mom !
Awesome stuff USA1.
If you are USA does that make your mum Lady Liberty1?
If you need to have her try to shoot a G19 with a slide like butter let me know and she can have a whirl of the good ladies if she wants. It isn't hard to rack, it has an extended slide release and if I recall correctly the only time we had to rack the gun for the CHL test was on the initial load.
Obviously if she is happy shooting a wheelie, and she is only ever going to want to shoot a wheelie, then no harm, no foul....but the offer stands on borrowing the G19.
btw....WTG mom!

That's a generous offer Kevin. I think shes pretty set in her ways though.Kevinf2349 wrote: If you need to have her try to shoot a G19 with a slide like butter let me know and she can have a whirl of the good ladies if she wants
I offered her to take a few shots with my carry guns with a round already
in the chamber and she declined.
I'm just gonna leave well enough alone for the time being.
I don't want to overwhelm her just yet .

Just to add to TAM's comment, my mother had the same issue with racking the slide. I had her try a Beretta Cheeta 86 (with the flip up barrel) and it solved the issue of racking the slide...you don't have to! My mother, when the time comes, will most likely use this for her CHL test.
USA1 - I am also very proud of your mom. She has decided to protect herself. This is great and I wish I could convince my mother and mother-in-law to do the same.
My wife decided to get her CHL and we dead set on shooting only revolvers. She did not feel comfortable having to pull back on the slide. Well her CHL came in and we went shopping for her carry weapon the next day. Much to my surprise, she choose the Beretta TomCat 3032. It gives her the ability to have a slightly thinner gun then the S&W 642 she originally wanted. The Beretta is both single and double action and has a safety. Now my wife can carry it cocked and ready to fire. The shorter trigger pull on the first shot will help accuracy. I would seriously look at this gun.

Truth is , I didn't even think about the TomCat back when we were shopping for a gun for her.
Oh well , it's too late now . Shes happy with the Smithy , and if momma's happy , I'm happy.

True. The best gun to carry is the gun you like and WILL carry.

Re: I'm Proud of my Mom !
I'm proud of your mom too. I'm a 50 year old woman. My brother-in-law got me interested in guns. My first gun was a S&W 642. It takes some effort to pull the trigger. I also thought I would never get a semi-automatic because I couldn't rack the slide either. In getting ready to take the CHL class, I decided to take another look at semi-autos after reading an article by Kathy Jackson on how to rack the slide:
http://corneredcat.com/RunGun/rack.aspx
After reading that article, I could rack the slide. So I bought my second gun, SA XD9 subcompact. I used that in the CHL shooting portion. It's much easier to pull that trigger that the S&W.
Now that I have my CHL, I mainly carry the S&W because it fits my purse better. I'm still looking for a better way to carry.
I hope you will share the link with your mom before you go to the shooting range with her again. Then, let her try it with you semi-auto. I think her shooting will improve because of the trigger action.

Thank you tx181. I E-mailed the link to her.tx181 wrote:

I will also mention that one of the reasons she liked the 642 is because of it's
light weight and that it fits nicely in her purse as you mentioned.
