i don't plan on ever carrying mags with me
1)a magazine failure is the most likely stoppage you'll experience using a pistol. Having a spare allows you to ditch the offender and throw in a new mag to fix the problem.
2)there's a thread in the crime blotter right now about a BG who took 17 rounds of .40 and lived another 4 minutes. Even if you only have to deal with one attacker, you may need a reload.
3)the possibility of being attacked by more than one assailant is pretty high. Predators like working in packs.
4) the cliche phrase "I've never known a man who was in a gunfight and wished he had less ammo!"

Google and Read this headline twice, think about it (he's alive):
Angel Alvarez, hit 23 times in Harlem shootout with cops, held without bail on weapons charges.
Only on TV do people fall down after one bullet hits them, OH and in those States where Magazine capacity is limited because there's some law or they teach criminals in school that they have to fall down before the ammo runs out.
I typically carry three 9mm pistols, plus 1 spare 20 round mag.
