I am not sure if I have put this in the right spot, (mods please forgive if I didn't).

Ok, here goes, I have been a lurker for about a week or so, I prefer to read about and retain as much useful knowledge that is given.


I recieved my CHL about two months ago and while I keep it in my vehicle and to and from the house I have yet to buy a holster and carry on my body.
I orgiinally bought an HK P30 due to the size and for what I thought ease of concealment, but while the ergonomics of the handle are wonderful, the texture of it leads me to believe I will be rubbed raw quicker than sliding down an asphalt hill in shorts.
Therefore I have a few questions as follows:

Who here carries a HK P30, and how do you carry that is comfortable?
I am 6'5" and 325#, and yes I agree round is a shape

How many here carry a full size weapon? Say 5" 1911 or Sig 220?

I have both and have been thinking about carrying one of the above or getting the "carry" version of the 220 or a 4" 1911, does anyone have any experience with this size single stack handgun?

Know, i pretty much have my mind set on IWB carry say about the 3-5 position, closer to 5 due to my current body style,(it is being worked on, but it is in the beginning stages.....lol), any advice on a IWB mag carrier or is the prefered method OWB for a mag carrier due to having the gun IWB?


Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Have also carried Glocks with heavily stippled grips in both holsters. Actually lightly sanded some texture off inside (left side - I'm right handed) of grip and eased any slight abrasive feeling (taking hard edges off mag release button with a file may also help, depending on gun)

The "sweat guard" on these style holsters helps a lot too.

I used to be nearly 300 pounds (6-foot-1) and carried this way when I was. Have dropped more than 60 pounds since summer and it certainly helps.

Strict diet of fish, white meat chicken, non-starchy vegetables (no potatoes, no corn, no beans) and fruit with no breads, no pasta, no sweets, no white rice, nothing processed, and drinking ONLY water and green tea (no soda, no coffee, no milk, no juice) did the trick.

Now keep it off by jogging a few times a week and still eating "healthy" but not as strict.

EDITED TO ADD: the clips can scuff a leather belt ... Solution = heat shrink rubber tubing, 1-inch or 3/4-inch, available in electrical department at any hardware store. A pain to slide it on the metal clip at first, but once it's on there and shrunk to fit with heat gun, hair dryer, or even cigarette lighter, it's there to stay and prevents clip from scuffing your belt.

I'll second the suggestion for the MTAC - I'm a bit shorter (6'1") and a bit lighter but when I carry my Walther PPS with the 8-round magazine, I carry it in an MTAC at 4:30 all day and don't rub an abrasion on my hip. Wear an undershirt - that will help a lot.

Find yourself a nice 9mm or .40 compact (not sub-compact) and you'll probably like the compromise of size versus flexibility of the weapon. Heck, Springfield Arms is coming out with a .45 that has almost exactly the same footprint of the PPS, so if you want the heavy-hitter, go for that.

The "handle" is called a grip

The best way I know of to keep textured grips from eating skin is a holster with a leather barrier between your skin and the grip, such as the hybrid holsters made by Kholster, http://www.kholster.com/photo_gallery.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Another solution is wear a Tee-Shirt between you and the grip ... with any holster

I started off at 5:00 years ago, now I carry at 3:00 always ... it gets in the way less, more comfortable sitting and doesn't go "clunk" on wooden church pews or metal folding chairs.
And
CompTac reinforced belt makes it look more natural by "rounding out" the "gap" between slide and pants.
I always get the Velcro

i'm 5-8 and 185lbs, and easily conceal my commander 1911 (4-1/4in barrel) in a DM Bullard "Dual Carry" IWB holster at 4:00. smooth grips, btw.

i don't plan on ever carrying mags with me, but single-stack mags are easy enough to conceal. most mag carriers i've seen are OWB. you could just carry them in your back pocket if you wanted...

Lots of people carrying the P30. You just need to find the position/holster/dress combination that works for you.

Buying the gun is the smallest cost you'll have. Ammo, holsters, training. The gun is the cheap part.

Anyone here have less than 5 holsters they never use?

All I drink is water, I could eat grilled/baked chicken six days a week, but no potatoes or bread?......That would be tough.

Of course I could stand to loose 100lbs+

I have checked HKPRO and while allot of the guys carry the P30, most are Kydex recommendations and OWB, I prefer leather and IWB.
That forum was the reason I bought the P30.......lol

I have to agree with the no potatoes,kinda hard, I have stuck to fish, and chicken, I am also doing the P90X, (CAN NOT STAND THE YOGA ) and it is working out.

5' 10", and I'd like to see 300 lb again some day. I carry everything from full sized M&P45 and 5" 1911 down to a PM9 (my smallest gun). Depends on the occasion. +1 for the Comp-Tac MTAC holster, although my back issues won't permit me to wear anything IWB anymore.

I am 5'11 265. I carry IWB using Crossbreed Supertuck(with proper clothing) a Glock 22 with no prob. I do wear shirts that I do not tuck in, and often with an undershirt. I think clothing choice makes the difference for me. I hope this helps.

I'd politely suggest you reconsider.

1)a magazine failure is the most likely stoppage you'll experience using a pistol. Having a spare allows you to ditch the offender and throw in a new mag to fix the problem.

2)there's a thread in the crime blotter right now about a BG who took 17 rounds of .40 and lived another 4 minutes. Even if you only have to deal with one attacker, you may need a reload.

3)the possibility of being attacked by more than one assailant is pretty high. Predators like working in packs.

4) the cliche phrase "I've never known a man who was in a gunfight and wished he had less ammo!"

At 5'11 and 190lbs I am not a big guy but manage to carry a full size Glock 17 in an i-tac owb holster with a galco mag/flashlight holder and as already mentioned, a qaulity gun belt goes a long ways. I also must confess that I "dress" around the gun, a favorite cover garment is baseball jerseys.
