Application protocol

Post by ccpacker »

Problem: History does not fit the form.
Under residence history, the requirement is to list all residences and dates without gaps. I have had a permanent address at the same location in Texas since May of 2005. However, during that time, I spent about 2 years in Hong Kong in a temporary position. After repatriating to the USA, we traveled through 45 of the 48 states and parts of Canada as full timing RVers. We stopped off for 18 months on a temporary position In Washington state. We are currently parked at that permanent address in central Texas. I have no records of all the places and RV parks where we stayed across the beautiful country for a day or two, a week, a month, etc. Full disclosure is a convoluted quagmire. Help with this quandary would be appreciated.

It sounds to me like you lived in Texas, Hong Kong, and Washington. Unless you established a residence (not a temporary vacation spot), you should be fine not listing the short stops while traveling. It would be the same as listing hotel rooms.
Of course, the safest bet is always to ask DPS.

If you call the DPS number on the CHL site, they are pretty helpful. I had to call with a few questions to avoid complications with my background check and they were quick to answer and give me the info I needed. It sounds to me that you only need to be concerned with places you established a long term residence so I don't think you'll have too much problem. I agree that it is worth at least asking to avoid delays.

Did you change the address on your DL when you were traveling? If not, I would list your residence as the address on your DL during that time, and note the traveling on one line as a gap in employment.

Well, I followed advice and called DPS/CHL. After waiting three different times for more than 30 minutes, they finally answered. They agreed that my situation would not fit the online form. The solution was for me to send an addendum letter with the remainder of my application, explaining the residences and employment that the form would not accept.
