If you ride for long enough you must remember that there's three kinds of riders: those that have been down, those that are going down and those that have been down and are going down again.

Ride safe, ride smart, and when you put all of those ponies to work have a method to your madness.

Didn't think about the third kind when I wrote Two Kinds of Motorcycle Riders.

Excellent points. I can't conceive of any scenario where I'd be trying to draw and shoot from a moving bike. Even the most sluggish of bikes commonly on the road today will speed you out of trouble's range in the blink of an eye. The closest I can come to a real need to have the gun strapped to my body would be if I was purposely run down by a cager while on my bike and got flung off it. If the assault continued, I'd be defensless with the gun out of reach on the bike.

Then again, as you said, it's probable that a violent crash would separate the gun from me anyway.

On top of all that, I'll be riding a Triumph Rocket III, so I can probably outrun most bullets.

I was going to throw a fourth in there: Those that have been down and quit riding because of it.

Then I realised they are no longer riders. I count myself in this group. Had a spill six weeks ago and almost lost my leg. Luckily, the doc was able to save my leg, but that was too close of a call for me. As it is, I'm looking at six months of recovery time and physical therapy.

I wasn't carrying when I had the spill as I was headed to the Denton County Courthouse and didn't want to disarm and leave my gun in the saddlebag when I got there. Good thing, too, as I thought of this when I was in the hospital - what would have happened to my gun had I been carrying? Would the police have held it? I simply don't know.

Check it out! I got my bike early. Picked her up at EuroSport Cycle in Ft. Worth and rode it home today. Nowhere on this bike to stash a gun. Hafta get some luggage.

Hey guys, sorry for the long absence...the weather's been nice up until the last several days and I haven't been able to keep away from the twisties. I finally settled on keeping the Kimber in my tank bag and just taking the bag with me anytime I dismount. Not as convenient as having it in an IWB or shoulder rig, but better than not having it at all or having it driven into my body like the head of a mallet in the event of a crash.

We need a special section on the CHL forums for us bike riders to plan combo rally rides to the gun ranges. There's a lot of nice twisty roads and hills between, say, Elm Fork in Irving and that little range down around Friendswood...

Maybe something like a poker run only using our targets from each range instead of cards.

Judging from the way my blackberry bruised my right hip and my Motorola Droid bruised my left hip when I crashed two weeks ago, I'm REALLY glad some wiser folks convinced me to stop carrying my 1911 on my body while riding. If I'd been wearing that little anvil in my shoulder rig I'd certainly have some broken ribs.

A good read, but not a fun read, that's for sure! Been a few years since I've had a streetbike, still have all the gear...still ride dirtbikes and ATVs with my buddies...that's where I've broken two collarbones/clavicles and a right wrist...helmets are a GREAT thing! Stay safe! BTW - I think I posted on this thread earlier - but I usually carried in the tank bag and/or saddle bags, sometimes with a shoulder rig - but like you say, that would've been a nice bruise/break.

You got that right! I thank Him for sparing me from worse injuries AND for bringing that little blond angel who made me wear a helmet and body armor into my life.
