Need help with class

#1

Post by spectre381 »

I posted this elsewhere in TexasCHLForum, but I think I may have put it in the wrong area...

Hello all - been looking at this site for a few weeks now, but this is my first post (2nd post now). Looks like a lot of good people, topics and answers on here!

Has anybody on here used either "Concealed Carry of San Antonio" or "Top Gun" (Houston) for their CHL class? If so, how was the experience and would you recommend the course / instructor to anyone else wanting to get their CHL or renewal?

I'm in the Victoria area, so I'm about equal distance to either one. I want to get the class done within the next week or so if at all possible, but I don't want to take it thru a "fly by night" operation.

Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated!

I took my class at Top Gun last August. The instructor was competent and informative. The facility was clean and the indoor range was breathable. I can't compare it with any other however. There are quite a few instructors in this forum and I am sure that any of them would be more than adequate for your needs. Good luck with your search and welcome to the forum.

Not CHL certification instruction, but if you're in Victoria you should consider John Farnam's course on February 29 (http://defense-training.com/sched/schedform.html). John comes to Victoria only twice each year, and it would be a great opportunity to get world-class training without having to pay for travel or lodging.

Me, I'll be driving down from Houston and paying for two nights at the Marriott, but I'll be there.

I saw that online the other night... unfortunately I won't be able to attend at that time. I work for a company doing contract work in Iraq and I will be over there at that time. Schedule's not bad, I'm gone for a few weeks and then home for a few weeks, but I won't be here at that time. I believe he'll be back in Victoria in October time-frame and I WILL be home for that one!

That's also why I said in my first post that I want to try to knock out the CHL in the next week or so... I'm heading out in a few weeks and wanted to get it done so it's waiting for me when I get back (hopefully).

Any examples of what they could have covered better? And what or who is "Lenny"?

Thanks to all for the info on Top Gun... anyone have info on "Concealed Carry of San Antonio"? Their website says they have an actual Judge and DA come in to talk about the legal side of CHL carry and the aftermath of a shooting incident. Anyone gone to this class and if so how was it?

I took my renewal from Top Gun in October. The instructor was friendly, informative, and did a good job of focusing on what we needed to know. Since it was a renewal, that was the test material, and what had changed in the last couple of years. I would (and have) recommend them to friends and family.

Thanks again for the info on Top Gun... I will most likely be signing up very soon to take the class thru them. They're offering a class this coming Saturday.

I did find out about an instructor about 20 minutes from me but I'm not too sure about it being on the "up and up"... I was told that all I have to do is call the instructor anytime I want to qualify and he'll meet me at the local range and get everything taken care of. I was under the impression that the state mandates a 10 hour course including the course of fire. A 30 minute shoot followed by a handshake isn't exactly what I'm looking for...

That's literally all the info I have on that particular instructor, so in fairness to him, he may do the range qualification anytime and require you to follow up with the class befores he signs you off.

Spectre,

I can highly recommend Concealed Carry of San Antonio. My wife and I both got our initial and renewal courses from him. Former SAPD, now investigator with the DA's office, I think he's been a CHL instructor since Day One.

He added the judge since I last took the course, but had the assistant DA (from the Bexar County DA office), Greg Lunan, in all of our courses. At the time of my initial, Mr. Lunan reviewed all shootings in Bexar County to see if there was anything to prosecute. Since then he has moved to different job in the office, but I doubt he forgot anything.

Sammy covers all the stuff, and is pleasant doing it. Has well run program. Recommend without reservation.

p.s. hope to see you at Farnam's in Victoria in October. I too am tied up this March. Have been twice before, EXCELLENT training.

Best wishes,
