SE Texans(Golden Triangle) interested in or shoot IDPA

New to the forums, didn't even know these were here honestly .

My club (Southeast Texas Sportsmans Club, Orange County on Hwy 105 south of Vidor) has offered me to the opportunity to get IDPA matches going at the club. The owner has wanted to get it going there but just does not have the time to run it full time. He said he has the blinds and we have the space. It's a great club for us who shoot a little differently than just standing in one spot in front of a target and firing slow. We've got about 5 people on board now. The owner has all of the paperwork to get the range IDPA sanctioned also.

I've never shot IDPA but have been interested in doing so for a while. Golden Triangle Gun Club has IDPA matches and I am planning on going out there to watch and possibly participate to see how they are done. I'm trying to gauge the interest of our area shooters on having another place to shoot matches. We are not trying "outdo" Golden Triangle by any means, most likely we would hold our matches opposite of theirs to give anyone an opportunity who missed theirs to shoot ours or if they want to shoot more than 1-2 matches a month. I think they do 2 a month maybe, so if we could squeeze in 2 a month that is almost one per weekend for our little arm pit of Texas.

Also hoping we can get a couple seasoned IDPA shooters to help us along in this endeavor. It's a really nice club and if any of you want to check it out drop me a line and when I go out there next you can come check out the ranges. I'm a member there and you can bring an unlimited number of guests.

If interested drop me a line

I'm originally from that area. I think my dad is a member of that gun club, but I'm not sure. (I know he's a member of one that is near Vidor). He's also a member of Golden Triangle Gun Club, and has been ever since I can remember.

I think you should start out hosting one IDPA match per month. This way, you can get a feel for it and know how much work is involved. Once your comfort level goes up, you can host more. Also, talk to the people that run Golden Triangle. I'm sure they'll help once they know your not trying to compete, but to compliment what they're doing.

Appreciate the advice. I was thinking of doing the same thing.

I thought about contacting Golden Triangle but not real sure how they would take it honestly. I may give it a shot though anyway.

I would imagine that the members of the Golden Triangle Gun Club would welcome another club hosting IDPA matches in the area, so long as your matches do not conflict with theirs. It should be a win-win situation; it would give them someplace else to shoot (and they would be guests so would relish not having to put on the match) and any new shooters that your club would generate might shoot at the GTGC. Good luck.

I shot their IDPA director an email to see what they say.

It doesn't seem all that difficult really, just wanting to make sure there is enough interest before I go ahead and go through with it all.

DMG you were right, spoke to one of the members/directors tonight and he is more than willing to help me along.

In case the Golden Triangle guy didn't mention him.... You might want to get in touch with the (new) IDPA Texas area coordinator: "Iron" Mike Webb. Helping groups is one of his "jobs". He's reachable via the link at http://www.texastactical.net/.

Also, you might find it useful to peruse the unofficial IDPA forum at EZBoard: http://p075.ezboard.com/bidpaforum. Lots of good information of all types is available here, from people very experienced in firing and running IDPA matches.

I appreciate the direction guys. I've shelved the idea for the time being to a few factors:

#1 Lack of interest.
#2 I'm not qualified in my opinion to get this started considering I've never even shot a match.
#3 After sending emails I've found 2 or 3 different places that already have IDPA matches locally.
#4 The whole point was to shoot more but if I end up running these things I'll probably shoot less.

So I'll just go shoot matches where they are already established for a while and just keep having fun at the club. If any of you local guys want to come out and join us just send an email. A friend and I usually set up scenarios and shoot them and hopefully this Sunday will throw rifles into the mix on the short rifle range.
