Do a google search for U.S.P.S.A. and I.D.P.A. clubs in Texas, as many of them also run 3-gun matches.
There are quite a few shooters who get humbled and / or discouraged when they show up at a match for the first time and see the proficiency level of some of the more experienced shooters. RARELY, if ever, do you see "A" class level shooters at the local gun ranges, let alone the Masters or the Grand Master class. Those muldoons can SHOOT. Sadly, a lot of new folks never come back due to the fact that they set their expectations too high and weren't competitive. DON'T worry about that, and when you show up, just focus on being safe, having fun, and doing the best you can do that day. If you stick with it, you WILL become a better shooter.
As you get to know your fellow shooters, you can find the ones who like to shoot a lot and car pool to some of the further matches. Gas gets expensive. :)
Regardless of how often you want to shoot, I wish you luck, and encourage you to stick with it, as experience in competition is one of the easiest ways to develop and maintain your shooting proficiency.

Other 3-Gun matches in the area are on the 2nd Saturday at WHIDPA http://www.whidpa.com/ which is at the Impact Zone west of Houston.
Also there is a 3-Gun match just south of College Station on the 4th Saturday or Sunday, you can shoot on either day. http://www.cccshooters.com/ This range is one of the nicest around. Huge facility with natural terrain to shoot on.
Starting with pistol only matches is a great place, either USPSA or IDPA. The Thunder Range is close to you and has both. 3-Gun matches are run similar to practical pistol matches as far as range commands and safety rules. Pistol matches are better to learn the ropes as you don't have the added complication of 3-guns.
Note the two matches linked to above are run by IMG rules, like most of the major 3-Gun matches you'll see on the shooting shows. The Thunder multigun match appears to be run by the IDPA DMG rules which are much more restrictive. I'm not a big fan of that set of rules as it really limits what can be done.

I think it will be something to get me out of the house once school starts for the kids. I am recently retired and need something to do. Looks like I have lots to read up on. Thanks to all for the advise.
