Looking For Dallas Area IDPA

I and a friend want to try out IDPA shooting. IDPA looks a lot more fun than just shooting down range at Target Master. Can someone recommend a good club in the DFW area (we live in Richardson) that we could try out? Anyone had bad experiences with local IDPA events?

Dallas Action Pistol Shooters shoots both indoors at DFW range on Mockingbird and also outdoors at Elm Fork Range just off Luna Road and West Northwest Hwy. Great bunch of people, they can be found at http://www.dallaspistol.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Hope this helps. :fire

Which one is the closest? Best for a newbie? Getting ammo and gear now can't wait to try it out!!

Take a look at Dallas Pistol Club. The club doesn't shoot IDPA or IPSC, but the paper matches (PPM and RWG) at DPC are close (more like IDSA). Its also close to Richardson. Come by at match time and talk with one of the match directors.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully I can get out to some of the events once my schedule slows down.

Collin County IDPA http://www.ccidpa.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; shoots every weekend and rarely less than 8 stage matches -great bang for the buck. Very new shooter friendly and by shooting larger matches along side the MA/EX shooters you pick things up a bit faster than at smaller low round count matches (IMO).

They shoot just north of Greenville and will host the 2010 Texas State Match on June 12.

Do you know how long the matches usually last?

Show up before 9:30am and let em know you are new so you make sure to get in on the new shooter briefing.

Matches are scheduled to start at 10am and usually are over by 2pm -obviously the number of shooters and stages can cut it down or stretch the time out a bit. And its just good form to either make it out to help setup or be willing to stay and help with tear down (usually a 15-30 minute operation with all the good help that shoots those matches).

:iagree: DPC does not require that you are a member to shoot in a match, you just pay a $15 fee for each match - no membership of any type required. It's a lot of fun and great training too!

ETA: Dallas Pistol Club is located on the northwest corner of Belt Line Rd and George Bush.

I shot at Collin County IDPA and that club do observe 100% of IDPA rules, 10 rds max, shoot from behind cover. I found it very restrictive compared to Dallas Pistol Club. There rules are more relaxed and you have both real world gun matches, personal defense matches and steel matches. All are fun but I prefer the real world gun and personal defense matches.

I shoot IPSC too.

That is true, CCIDPA is indeed a real IDPA club and their matches are run by the rule book. That is one of the requirements for an IDPA club which is, I gather, what the OP was requesting. ;-)

I personally prefer a club to play by the rules of the game they are part of whether it is IPSC or IDPA or ICORE etc. IF I go for IDPA I want to shoot IDPA. If I wanted to shoot IPSC I would go to an IPSC club. That said I don't have any issues with clubs relaxing rules for new shooters to give them an opportunity to learn the rules without being beat up with the rules.
