Scope setup for 3 Gun

#1

Post by mblud »

I just ordered a LWRC M6A3 and am looking at scope options. I am planning on starting 3 gun matches and need some advice from the gurus. My thoughs are the following set up:

Aimpoint Comp M4s w/ LaRue Tactical QD Mount
Aimpoint 3X Magnifier With LaRue Tactical QD Pivot Mount LT649

From my neophyte view this sounds like a perfect setup. Move the 3X out of the way for CQB then flip it back for long range work. This would also be a good setup for the other uses of the weapon.....self defense and varmint hunting.

My one concern is if the 3x magnification is enough for longer range shots? Would I be better served with something like Nightforce 1x4 or Trijicon AccuPoin 1x4.

I know I can't have everything in on package, but I am thinking the Aimpoint comes close......only problem is the $$$$ :banghead:

From a match point of view
The answer to your question is a question, where are you going to be shooting your matches?
I mean by that, if your are going to shoot some of the western states 3 gun matches, may not be enough, they shoot out to 500 yd or more at some matches.
If you are going to stay local (TX) that will work just fine. Remember most rules will allow a magnifier + 1x optic as "one optic". Most also require that the weapon stay configured the same way throughout the match, i.e. if you want to use the magnifier it needs to be on the entire match (not necessarily in fron t of the Aimpoint).

Remember the aimpoint is a single dot so you will have to learn and know your holdovers with a single dot. Not hard to do.
Several people shoot this configuration at our monthly match. We only shoot to about 200 yds, so should not be a problem. Other matches in the area (carbine only and 3 gun) will be about the same or less.
The optimum configuration is a 1-4 x variable scope. I use a Meopta 1-4 on a Larue SPRE mount and it meets all my needs, including old eyes.
If you are looking at 1-4 don't forget a Burris (popular with the 3G crowd). Also check AR15.com & Brian Enos for used glass
Any other questions let me know

Thanks Bob! I called LaRue today to talk about optics and they suggested a setup with an offset T1 or H1 and a Nightforce 2.5 - 10 x 32. I like this idea because I would have the ability to shoot longer distance for both hunting and competitions and still have the CQB. However this is a LOT more money! Would this be legal in 3Gun? Also, where can I find the rules for 3 gun? I can't seem to find a standard?

Thanks again!

Good set up, but at alot of matches that would put you in open class.
MY belief (and it might be wrong) is that there is not a good compromise between competition and hunting. Two different objectives.
Search for a used aimpoint and magnifier and then save a little for your hunting optic.
Check out http://www.swfa.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for some other options.

Go to the Brian Enos forum, 3 gun section and search optics
Also do the same at AR15.com Training 3gun

One thing you will learn about three gun: the rules DO vary.
Except for USPSA matchs must clubs and all the major matches use their own set of rules.

Send me a PM with your email and I will send you some copies of rules I have accumulated.

I think the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x, Meopta 1-4x, the Burris XTR 1-4x, and the Millet 1-4x are all options I would consider. A true 1-4x scope is a lot less bulky on the rifle and has a proper reticule like stated above so hold over would be easier. Also it is one device to rely on instead of two. Also less mounts to buy. If you buy right you can find a killer deal on a Trijicon 1.25-4x with a mount for WAY less money than an Aimpoint+magnifier+two mounts. I have an Accupoint 3-9x40 and love it in every aspect...clarity, ruggedness, reticule is self illuminated w/tritium and fiber optics so no batteries needed...EVER.

For 3gun the Accupoint in 1-4x would be ideal in every way.

mblud,

six months ago i started off with an aimpoint, shooting at bob's matches...which do not exceed 200 yards. i planned on going with the magnifier route as well.
then i looked though a fellow shooter's TR24 accupoint and was super impressed by it.

in the end, for the money and simplicity i chose the TR24 + larue SPRE.

I too recommend the offset rds option with a magnified primary optic.
