This has all been pretty enlightning. It sounds like everyone's take is more or less the same, it is what it is. Can't see it, don't deserve it, but it's there for the taking. Sounds like it is up to ME where I stand. I then wonder if I should trust myself enough to make that determination. Who do I think I am? Who am I to say that I am good enough for that gift. Does that make sense?

I guess is what the Catholic church offers that others don't. A human being to stand in front of you and tell you where you stand.

Of course you don't deserve it, but there comes a point where faith has to enter the equation. If you deserved it, it wouldn't be much of a gift. It would be more like a prize that you'd won.

Take comfort in the fact that you're not saying that. It is not our worthiness, but Christ's that is controlling. Jesus' sacrifice is sufficient for anyone who accepts it, regardless what they have done. A better question would be "who among us has the right to say His sacrifice was not sufficient to save some people?"

There's where you're going down the wrong path. You don't HAVE to be "good enough" (which is very fortunate because none of us is "good enough"). All you have to do is accept it.

Admit that you're a sinner. Acknowledge that you need Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Accept the fact that He paid the debt that you can't pay. Spend the rest of your life saying, "Thank You." to Him.

A better question would be "who among us has the right to say His sacrifice was not sufficient to save some people?"

The Roman soldiers stationed at the Cross who witnessed Jesus forgiving the criminal hanging next to him wouldn't challenge that question.

That was God's "Amazing Grace" in action. Someone should write a hymn about that.

Jesus taught and embodied God's love to the very end.

How exactly does a human male KNOW without question that they have been saved. We all know what it takes to become saved, Accepting Jesus Christ into your heart and accepting his death as one of love for us and our future sins.

All the above is great advice, but here is another place where I have found assurance.

The most important question in the word of God.
Matt 16:15. Jesus asks, who do ...YOU... say that I am?


The answer given by Peter.
Matt 16:16. You are Christ the Son of the living God.

Notice that the question is not "what is my name".
When Peter answered he was saying he "knew" Jesus.

Now comes the assuring part of the exchange.
Matt 16:17. Jesus says to Peter, you are blessed by God because ..only..
God the Father in heaven and not any man could give you this revelation.

If you "know" Jesus and all that His name implies, God has revealed this to you. Rest assured that you are blessed by the Father in heaven just as was Peter.

Jbirds answer is correct and I want to add is that once you as the "head of your house" receives Christ and you take what God has given you (Salvation a free gift) and do what is right then your family will sure to follow. If you continue the reading in Acts you see that is exactly what happen to the Prison Guards family.
