I thought this timeline might be of interest. I live in Dallas.
Packet sent 01/15/13
Receipt received 01/29/13, with an advisory that processing time was estimated at three months from the date of the receipt.
License received in the mail today, 04/04/13, dated 03/21/13. Accompanying letter dated 03/25/13.

Welcome to the forum.
Guess Texas applicants shouldn't fuss about <60 days for ours if Virginia is taking 3 months.

MUCH better than when I got mine:
05/18/2009 - Mailed application & other paperwork to DPS
05/19/2009 - Packet received in Austin
06/23/2009 - Status changed to 'Processing Application'
09/09/2009 - Application Completed - license issued or certificate active (day 113 since packet received in Austin)
09/12/2009 - Plastic in Hand
I was *not* pleased.
However, I was far from the only one in that boat during the last half of '09.
Also, I second the "Weclome!"

Nope, no contact of any kind between the receipt and the permit.
Thanks for the welcome, everyone.

Can I ask what is the benefit of getting Virginia CHL if you live in Texas?

It did.....but I'm glad you went through and got your Texas CHL as well. I'm betting the Virginia class didn't teach about Texas laws.

It's roughly the same benefit as getting a gun made in a different state if you live in Texas.

Ummm, not really. If you ever end up in court, the prosecution probably won't care one iota if your gun was made outside of Texas. If you didn't learn Texas laws, on the other hand, I'm betting they WILL care.

I would wear my fingers to the bone quoting posts that demonstrate passing the Texas CHL class doesn't mean someone knows Texas law.

That's fine, knock yourself out. But just getting a non-resident CHL from another state will likely get you in more hot water if you ever end up in a court of law because you had to use your gun.

If that's true, it should be the easiest thing in the world to cite statistics to back it up.

I don't have statistics, and I'm not going to bother to look them up. But I just know that *I* will do everything in *my* power to make sure I don't get raked over the coals by a prosecuting attorney if I ever have to fire my gun in self defense.
To me, that means going through a TEXAS CHL class (since I do LIVE in Texas), learning Texas laws, and paying my application fee to the state of TEXAS - since I live in this great state. I decided that shortcuts and saving a few bucks wasn't in my own best interest.
