Pardon me, but is this chair taken?

The waiting begins. I am a relatively new handgun owner. I took the plunge when I realized that the bad guys are getting closer and closer to my humble abode. We have a new major highway that borders my subdivision. In recent months a handful of kick-ins and 3 arrests within a small radius of my home have lead me to believe now is the time to consider carrying a weapon. I also work in an office tower adjoining the Houston Galleria and there are always folks milling around the parking lot. You know some of these folks are up to no good when you see them as you walk out of the building, then again in a different section as you drive out. They are either scoping the place out or more last than I have ever been.

I opened my file with the DPS on June 22, took my class on June 23, finger printed and mailed on June 26. From what it looks like, I will be here for most of the summer.

I do want to say that I thought I was moving through the process with a high level of thought and consideration of the possible outcome should the time ever come that I may need to use a weapon. I pray that moment will never present itself. But I found a few of the discussions last Saturday extremely sobering and eye opening. I think that some of the sobering came from new found knowledge that even the use of my shotgun in a clear case of self defense (i.e. a kick in event) will land me in front of a Grand Jury. Needless to say, while sobering, I am committed to assuring that I continue to protect my wife of 31 years - and that she protect me.

I'll update as soon as my status changes.

I took my class on the 21st of May, and I have to agree with you. It was a little scary thinking about all the legal implications that can occur if you simply draw a gun, much less use it. But I think that that is the one of the purposes of the class, to make sure you realize what it is you are doing. Should you hesitate to shoot if your life is in danger or someone is breaking into your home, no! But I think there might be times when you have a moment to think, and that is what you should do. Although that's just my opinion. :leaving

I think it kinda depends on where you live as to the legal implications. I know of some instances out in rural communities where charges were never filed on the self defender. I think that in big cities the police probably don't have the time to get to the bottom of the issue, so they have no choice but to file charges and let the system sort it out.

I'm only a couple weeks ahead of you. I agree that the discussions in the class were very sobering. Some of that I never thought of...and I'm hopeful that if the time ever comes I have the training necessary to make those quick decisions. It is a never ending learning process, for certain. And this is a good place for the continuing education!

I agree with you.....The responsibility of a CHL requires a lot of continuing education and training....... The 10 hours of the CHL class is just the beginning.

I am sure that I am being punished for checking in on the database 10x a day. I am still a no show this evening. I am going to wait until early next week, then re-mail if my material has not been registered as received.

I mailed mine on 6/25, and it just showed up as received today. I'm sure the holiday delayed a little.
