Packet arrived at DPS 2/8
Pin number received 2/28
Still showing "processing application" 3/24

You're better off than me....I mailed mine on 1/28 and still haven't received a PIN.....When I called last week, they told me that they hadn't entered any apps received after 1/24. Apparently that was a lie! LOL

Update: So I called DPS 3/31, to ask what's up. Apparently my fingerprints are fine, and they are waiting on background checks but wait, oh no it looks like they sent a letter requesting more information...

Well, after that phone call 3/31, there hasn't been anything in the mail asking me for additional information, nor has there been any changes in my online status from "processing application." I sent DPS an email to inquire, but it seems that maybe the person I spoke to before was confused.

Anyways, they say they are still waiting on the background checks (as they have been for maybe a month now)

My bum is starting to get sore from sitting here :grumble

57 business days since confirmed receipt of my application by Texas DPS on 2/8.

Still waiting, but it seems that a few people who sent their packets off a few days before me have just recently received their plastic, so maybe I can expect mine soon?

(hopefully) soon to be carrying 24/7

So, let me tell you about a little saga that has been going on.

Since I have been waiting over 90 days, I decided to write Gov. Perry, State Sen. Shapiro, and State Rep. Madden to express my displeasure at the long wait time, in the hopes that there will be some changes in the future that streamline this operation for future CHL applicants, and one day for my renewal.

I receive replies from both Gov. Perry's office and Rep Madden's office, although the response from Rep. Madden's office (being my local rep) was a lot more specific to my request. A couple emails back and forth, and Rep. Madden's office tells me they will contact the liason at DPS on my behalf. Today I get a call from a supervisor at the CHL department of DPS, and he tells me that my application has actually been approved and is completed (despite the online status showing as "processing application") and that they are physically making the licenses, since they send those out to a different department to get done. :thewave

I asked if at any point there was anything wrong with my application, such as missing information, etc, and he said no, it was processed without a hitch, it just took longer than expected.

This supervisor then explains to me that he will be calling me back tomorrow evening after he confirms this information by looking at the physical card (since he had only looked at the computer file). And, he tells me that if I don't hear from him to give him a call, and he leaves his number. How's that for service?

So, many of you other folks waiting might be in the same boat as me - ie the card is being physically made. I assume that the department that physically makes them sends them back to CHL licensing in batches, not as they are completed, which would explain how it seems that people on this forum seem to be getting approvals in groups.

In this whole process I have not blamed a single person or entity for my long wait. I don't think it is any particular group's fault. That being said, the process is not right and needs to be fixed, and thankfully Chas and TSRA is working with Chairman Driver to help improve the process, but the more your Representatives and Senators hear from their constituents, the more they will also be inclined to help or to vote for additional budget/personnel for CHL applications. As a future plastic holder, I'm thankful for all the people before me who have helped made CHL a success in Texas, and I think it's only appropriate that we do our part to help future CHL holders.

Looking forward to my Wally Walk!

So, I spoke with the CHL supervisor again today, and apparently the holdup on my CHL license was due to the fact that they had physically printed the card, but there was something amiss with the tint of the card. In other words, some discoloration. He said that they were originally going to send it back to get it remade, but considering how minor it is and how big the backlog is, it wouldn't be worth the wait. I asked if LE would have any problems with it and he said no, so they put it in the mail today.

Supervisor expects me to receive it in a couple days. Online status still reads "processing application," but I trust him a lot more than the website. I'll let you know when I actually get it and provide full timeline.

Application Completed!

#27

Post by dukesean »

Checked the status on the website for kicks this morning (since I already knew my status per previous posts) and "Application Completed - license issued or certificate active" :hurry:

So, here is the timeline:
Class taken 2/2/08
Packet mailed 2/6/08
Packet received at DPS 2/8/08
Received PIN 2/28/08
Wrote letter to Rep. Madden 5/5/08
Received response from Rep. Madden's office 5/12/08
Received call from DPS supervisor 5/13/08
Received followup call from DPS supervisor 5/15/08
Application Completed - license issued or certificate active 5/16/08
Plastic in hand - a couple more days?

So, from DPS receipt of application to application completed on website: 98 calendar days
Anyways, just glad this wait is drawing to an end. :woohoo

I wonder, did the DPS react to political pressure or was it mere coincidence?

Regardless, congratulations are in order. Be armed and be safe.
I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations. ~James Madison, speech, Virginia Convention, 1788

I think it was mere coincidence. I think my application was already on its way to being completed, but definitely knowing that someone was looking out for it reassured me. Besides, I was getting much better information and updates than calling/emailing DPS.

And again, the more you raise this issue to your reps, the more likely something is going to be done about it in Austin.
